Of creating a Halloween Name~~~~

Alright Darklings, now is the time to create your Halloween name and we've been having fun with this at work.

This is what you do --- Take the 1st letter of your first name , then take the Last letter of your middle name, then take the 1st letter of your last name and compare them to the list below.

For example if your first name starts with the letter A, look at the green column and you will find  it equals "Creepy"
If the last letter of your middle names end with the letter E, look at the orange column and you will find "Ghost"
If the the 1st letter of your last name starts with the letter A, look at the blue column and you will find it equals  "Caster"
So your Halloween name will be  Creepy Ghost Caster.

Mine came out Haunted Skull Giver,  oh well.

Have Fun Darklings!

Of more on the BART strike and the heat!!! Oh the Heat!!! And County Fairs~~~

Well Darklings,

Unless something or someone puts a stop to this nonsense, the BART Strike will happen, come Monday morning, there will be no way except by car (a frightening thought) and Ferry (if you find a way to get to it) to San Francisco.   At least in S.F. Muni will be working but it will be overworked, over crowded and pure HELL!   I pity any tourists.

I have a feeling that Taxi's will be working overtime and will be hard to find.

Yes Lucretia it is AC Transit Bus system that's striking in sympathy. ***sigh***   Why oh why can't something as simple as Disneyland's old "People Movers" be in place and it be run without strike approval.  If all the "Green People" want us to use Public Transit more, come up with something better.

I am home today.   Given the heat we are having the air conditioning failed at work yesterday,  I was asked to come in yesterday and if possible work most of the day, several staffers were out ill.  I did, until 4 p.m. and then the A.C. went.

Our Boss said "everyone go home, stay cool, you'll be paid full wages, stay home tomorrow too, you'll be paid" and the phones were put on auto messages.

So I grabbed the Ferry, caught the bus home and lo and behold there was my sister, saying "do you want to deal with gridlock and go with me to the county fair?"   WHY NOT!!!

I was wearing my long sleeve cotton shirt and skirt, comfortable walking shoes,  packed my straw hat and black parasol, a large bottle of water and my Nutragena SPF 100 sunblock and off we went.   Got there by 6 p.m. missing the worse of the 90 plus degree heat.

As soon as we got there, Sis spotted a manufacturer of Tiki Huts and Bars,  I looked at her and asked "What are you thinking?"   she said that the back enclosed porch will be perfect for a Lanai, and she wants to do her yard 1950's tropical (slightly kitchy 1950's tropical).   And she looked at the out door tubs,  found one that is designed to be a rock waterfall.

I groaned inwardly, but then thought, "why not, she has the money that she's worked hard for, everyone is intitled to dream, so why not?"

So she gathered her information took pix's with her camera and then we continued onto the outdoor garden area's that I found them relaxing and quaint,  Sis took more pictures "Ideas" she said.

We were amused by the small animal exhibits of chicks, geese, pigeons, baby turkeys, pekin ducks, rabbits and the exotic repetiles.   We even had a chance before they packed up to see from one of the nature santuaries that rescues wild animals and helps preserve nature and educate children,  a barn owl native to our local, he could not be released in the wild, but to see him so close up and admire his beauty was (again my favorite word) fasinating.    I wanted to reach out and pet him but knew that was not a good idea, but the intellegence in his eyes, and how he took everything in and yet not be startled by people.  Of course it helps to not startle him either.  We looked right into each others eyes and I could see he was taking me all in, analizing me, determining if I was friend or foe.

I took one of their information sheets because I wanted to plan to make an annual or bi-annual donation to the santuary.

Of course we went through all the "hucksters area's"   I bought a sign to put in the front window of my house "this house protected by Bad Ass Mutt Security", not that Belladonna is a bad ass mutt, but she does let me know if anyone is at the front or bad door.

And in another area there was a lady selling vintage jewerly, and I found several pieces of mourning jewerley that I fell in love with.  But I think I really made out with a couple of purses, one was pink with black trim and silver rivets with a skull design, I purchased that for Coralline, and for myself I found a simple slim black purse with a skull clasp in black metal and black eyes, just the perfect thing for a casual evening out.

The kiddie rides, with one ride that was originally from Michael Jackson's estate, and watching the little kiddies ride the live ponies under an awning to protect them from the sun, there was another pony with it's colt resting in its own corral in plenty of ample shade, with ample water and feed, checked on with regularity by the owners.  Just seeing the look of joy on the little toddler's faces riding on the ponies with either Mommy or Daddy walking next to them.   The owners had set it up in such a way that it was very safe and comfortable for everyone and the ponies.

Then the 4 H exhibits of sewing, quilting, woodworking, baking, art, some of the quilts were amazing.

We had fun listening  for a couple of minutes to an old-fashion country band, as we ate Big Bubba's Bar-B-Que Ribs,  nothing like County Fair Food to put on the calories.  And we had a chance to see a Hypnotist do her work with over a dozen people from the audience.  Although we couldn't stay to see her entire program Sis got her business card.  "I want to have an appointment with her to discuss hypnotheraphy"   I wondered why Sis was interested in this but if there is one thing I've learned about Sis is that there is always a reason why she is going to do something.

Although very warm, the breeze that came up made everything very comfortable.  And no one asked why we had snuck in Belladonna in her carry all.  Well to make it even more spoiled for her, because I was so concerned about walking and carrying her in the carry all some months ago with my back injury, Doyle came across a stroller in a pet shop just for "walking one's little baby"

I know Darklings, am I spoiling her?  Yes I am, but on a very hot day or any kind of long walking like Flea Markets, Farmer's Markets, Art/Wine/Crafts Festivals and things of that nature it is the perfect and humane thing to do, especially for little dogs.  The only place one cannot take a dog or a pet of any kind is Zoo's, because of any airborn transmitted virus.

We walked the mid-way carnival, but I was concerned that the force of almost all the rides would hurt my back, but we had fun talking about how the rides use to look when we were children and had different names.

Then it was time to return home, and thank goodness for air conditioning in cars.  I asked Sis why did she want to go to the County Fair?   And she replied, "I wanted to do something nearly child-like and simple, and the County Fair was the best way to go.  Maybe we'll take a picnic lunch to Tilden Park this weekend while Belladonna is being baby sat and we'll ride the Merry-go-round."    I asked her if anything had gone wrong and she said "No, I'm just tired of peoples worries and things and need several mental health days" and that was as good as any explanation.

Yes My Darklings, do simple child-like things, wiggle your toes in the Sand and build Sand castles, take pictures or paint pretty images even if you are not a good painter, neighter was Grandma Moses and her works are work some money.  But just do fun pleasureable things, get out of yourself and enjoy life.

Of frustrations of medicine, wine, legal fees and The Addams Family~~~~~

Hello My Darklings,

Well I'm a little frustrated right now, I've been a very good "little girl" but because of the pain medications I'm on I can't go to a wine tasting, so I'm pouting a little.

Not that I have to take them all the time,  I did in the early part of my recovery and any wine, etc.,  was off limits, but now I only have to take it as needed.

But Doyle and the Doctor in their concern informed me "No wine before its time"  playing upon an old joke, but considering my current condition so true.

Doyle said there will be other times and he's right, I guess I'm just going through a frustrating period.

But on another note I've been in touch with my lawyer and he thinks there is going to be a breakthrough and we may not have to go to court.

When he sent copies of the bills of expenses accrued so far including the cost of a nearly new car to the other driver's lawyer, it seems he almost had an apoplectic fit or stroke or whatever and has been having serious talks with the man, even brought in a retired judge to tell him what the most likely outcome will be, given the mounds of evidence supporting our side and damming for his.

And it seems that this person is in line for a promotion and this could seriously harm his chances.   So my lawyer said to not be surprised if we get a very serious out of court settlement, but he'll know better in the next few weeks.   So I'll be going in to see him with my sister and Louise next week so he can project what my future expenses will be plus legal fees and such and make  a  very serious presentation.

In a way it's nice to have something hanging over someone else's head.

My co-workers have been calling me to discuss some situations to be squared away with.   So the Doctor said that I can go in 1 day just to do a conference with staff, I must have my caregiver and the wheelchair even though my walking and strength has made great improvements.   He is concerned that once I get into the work environment I'll be like an old fire horse, I hear the bell and run to the fire.   And he's right.

I do have to confess though being at home for this long a period has given me some consideration to the idea of retirement, but I don't think I'm ready for it yet.  I think I'll know better once I'm back to working full-time.   Even my boss is wondering if there is a way I could retire and yet work on an hourly basis and it is possible.  So I'll keep that idea percolating on the back burner so to speak.

Doyle gave me a treat last night, he surprised me with the complete set of  "The Addams Family" episodes, I think the one with the spacemen was so funny and absurd but the 6 we saw last night were all funny, and it has given me more ideas for some fun things around the house.

But now Louise is here and we are going to the Spa so I can partake of that nice heated jacuzzi and a facial massage, she is going to have one too, my treat.  With Ella I've suggested something like this for her but she says she is not the Spa type,  so I'm going to have to put my "thinking cap" on.

Of Easter and a Time Machine~~~~

Hello My Darklings,

I know I haven't posted for a number of days, but things happened.

For some reason our phone line became disconnected so Doyle was working with me using our cell phones, finally our neighbors phone to get the line re-connected.   It was an error on the phone company's part, they thought it was the house next to me that had been abandoned by the former owners.

Then with the last major rain storm (although not bad) one of the gutters separated, so had to have that repaired.

Then Doctor appointments, dental appointments (teeth are fine, and body is coming along fine) and all my therapy, time flew by.

Easter, although a bit drizzly, was lovely.

Doyle and I went to mass at one of the older Catholic Churches.  He surprised me with a lovely Gardenia corsage, I thought they weren't in season yet, so how he did it I have no idea, but I enjoyed wearing it all day.

Then we went for a drive in my vintage car, we even dressed as if we were from the 1940's, although I did have to use wheel chair a bit because my back wanted to act up. And Belladonna came with us everywhere we went.  Except into church.

We had an early lunch at our favorite restaurant, then Doyle took me to the See's Candy store and bought a 2 pound box of chocolates with soft centers (I do love See's), we drove down Oakland's Broadway, past the Paramount Theatre and the looks from people seeing the old car, so many "thumbs up",  people pulled up along side us to ask what year it was made,  and were surprised to see how we were dressed and the music we were playing.

We drove around Lake Merritt and then up to Piedmont to St. Mary's cemetery, it was too wet to step onto the grass, but I could see my parents graves as Doyle put flowers on them for me.   Then to Alameda and down along Shoreline Drive, it was a bit cloudy to see the San Francisco skyline too well, we then drove back to the old Naval Air Station and admired the U.S.S. Hornet.

Then, before it got too late we went to my favorite antique and vintage shop and I found two pair of shoes from the 1940's that were almost new and fit beautifully.

Eventually we worked our way back in a loop going down Doolittle Drive and then back along East 14th Street to home, and although sometimes driving along East 14th can be dangerous, the traffic was light and everyone who saw us looked like we had come out of a time machine,  the rain had stopped so we rolled down the windows and because I have a tape deck under the dash, we played Big Band music.

Doyle has a friend that worked up about a dozen Tapes so that they sound like radio broadcasts with news breaks and music and commercial  announcements from the 1940's.

The looks on some people's faces when they'd hear our "radio", once person asked us "Which President?"  and I replied "Why President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he's the current president."

The look on the young man's face was priceless,  he acted like he'd seen a ghost!!!   Both Doyle and I loved it.

But then I was getting tired and Doyle saw that I had gone my limit for the Day and we drove home.  Fortunately Doyle had picked up what was going to be our dinner the night before and only had to be warmed up.

I floated the gardenia's in a crystal bowl of water so that it's scent could fill the room and I could admire it for a few more days.  Doyle suggested that I'd look into finding silk gardenia's to make into a permanent corsage, a good idea.

We watched one of our favorite crime drama movies "The Blue Gardenia" with Alan Ladd and then relaxed and read and listened to our favorite CD's until it was time to go to bed, my sister Marie had called and she was doing well and would be coming home the following day.

It was so much fun to "go back in time" even for one day.

I hope all you Darklings had a wonderful Easter.

I'll post more later.

Later, Darklings

Cakes, perfumes, nail polish and mattresses~~~Fun along the way~~~~

Darklings,

The last weekend was a lot of fun for me and my Niece that I call ‘Coralline’. But this last work week had shaped up as possibly something different.

Sometimes with the difficulty of the work we do, on our lunch breaks we look for things to make us laugh and sometimes its things that are not quiet appropriate.

Right now we do not want to hear about the FBI and CIA scandal or anything else, it is something that has been going on for a hundred years although I do love the dark side of this scandal, but it can become another boring soap opera or tella novella. The story is so old it becomes a big “yawn”.

One of our staffers is getting married, fortunately a simple wedding, reception to be held in her family’s large home, and food to be pot luck. She borrowed a wedding dress, but is using her Mother’s wedding veil. Groom and best man wearing a nice suit, one maid of honor to wear her best evening dress---I mean Darklings, she is going for economy as much as possible, wedding to take place on Dec 23. Christmas theme of course which the maid of honor is thrilled because it means buying a new evening dress in red, with either a red or white fascinator style hat. The service to be held in church that she booked a year in advance.

She is not freaking out, no Bridezilla here, for which I and other’s are grateful, but she was trying to find a good cake design. So she had been looking on line, for something, but she decided a white cake with red flowers poinsettia style and green leaves and a Mr. and Mrs. Claus as a cake topper, with raspberry filling, simple, easy, not fussy. But she found this web site called Cake Wrecks---we have been laughing so hard at these unintentional disasters, some of them weird, creepy (but then I love creepy), laughable and in appropriate.

So every so often when things get depressing at work, we go to Cake Wrecks for a laugh, check it out, you may even get an idea for a cake for some strange occasion---web site is www.cakewrecks.com

And now for something completely different~~~~~

As you know Darklings, I LOVE perfumes and colognes, I had been intrigued by Channel’s latest scent “Coco Noir” but came away feeling a bit disappointed, well the reviews were pretty much the same, a complete disappointment. Even Givenchy’s “Dahlia Noir” was a bit disappointing, but I saved the print ads for them just as souvenirs, but I’m still in love with Elizabeth Taylor’s “Black Pearls” but it’s my understanding that its been pulled off the market, even though the reviews have been fairly favorable.

There is a web site that I have come across where you can purchase many of these scents and also check out what reviews and personal opinions have been published---the web site is www.fragrancex.com, at least you can get multiple opinions and in some cases purchase sample vials, which is excellent if you are on a budget or are unable to get to a department store to purchase a scent that you desire.

I simply am having too much fun adding to my nail polish wardrobe, although I don’t buy all of them, I couldn’t afford it, but I do purchase select intriguing colors.

L’Oreal has come out with their “Electric Fantasy” collection, and of all the color’s in the collection I really love the purple shimmer called “The Mystic’s Future” a rich, royal warm purple with a lovely fantasy shimmer.

Now for those of you younger Darklings the color is also paired with a lipstick called “The Mystic’s Kiss” so if you go clubbing but don’t want to wear black, then go with the purples with black sequins, purple up your lips, eyes and nails, for an ethereal corpse-like effect.

There are other colors in the Electric Fantasy collection but I’ll leave that to other nail critic’s on their opinions.

I have my niece ‘Coralline’ again this weekend, she begged her parents to come here instead of one of her brothers innumerable ball games, and she is being very helpful.

‘Coralline’ wants to get into being a very young Baby Batling, and since she is here for the weekend, that is good because it gives her a chance to get acquainted with her other Auntie while we move my sisters things, boxes and such from storage unit to the house.

I told my niece that since she is going to a private school she has to make concessions about becoming a Baby Batling, but I did present her with an extra bottle of “Spooky Skull” nail shimmer from the Revlon Halloween collection for her helping us move things, which she did very willingly. I managed to purchase a stray bottle that was left over from the promotion a few weeks ago.

With the Sally Hansen nail polish line, I was intrigued with “Midnight in NY” a black shimmer, and the glints of shimmer in some lights appear to be red and gold and in other lights silvery, the shimmer is so fine that it takes 3 coats to bring it out, I love its sophisticated Blackness, so much more refined in my opinion that if it just had a silver shimmer to it.

But on the other end of the spectrum is Sally Hansen’s’ “Hidden Treasures” a incredibly pale pink shimmer of the most palest pink I’ve every come across and it too changes with the light, in some lights the barest hint of pink, in other a pearlized white that reminds one of the most perfect oyster pearl.

I gave my niece a bottle of that color as well. With those two colors she is on her way to Gothicness, at least in a mild way

Doyle has been in and out of the house, he comes home, checks in on me, gives me a quick update without revealing anything sensitive and then has to leave again, well it is something I’m use to, he hopes to make it for Thanksgiving Dinner at my Brother’s house. But sometimes he surprises me, in one corner of my dressing room he’s put up another sign but in keeping with the décor of the room is white with black and gold lettering it happens to be over where I keep my perfume and nail polish collection and is delicate and lovely----the sign says “Apothecarium” which is different from “Apothecia” where I have the wines stored. I think he is having too much fun but I’m not going to discourage him.

Having my sister at home is fun and it’s really very relaxing for the both of us in many ways, with us moving much of her boxes out of storage, Doyle has left me with his van so we can move more boxes and such, and the following weekend after Thanksgiving, my Brother and his brother in-law with his truck, will move the few pieces of furniture that my sister has and she can get her self finally settled into her bedroom.

Fortunately I was already in possession of a bedroom set from my Great-Aunt so it was just getting a mattress for her and also new mattress for another bed for our niece.

My sister is really glad with this idea of having her things and making my home her home base, less stressful and economically better for her. And considering how big the house is, it feels good to have her in it when Doyle is away on assignment.

Since I have 5 bedrooms and 4 ½ baths, my sister is using the two bedrooms that share a bath, that way she can have her own sitting room to have her mini-office set up with her computer and own phone line. She loves hardwired land lines like I do and this way it does not tie up my computer line at all.

There will be times when she has to go out of town for her work, but at least she can feel comfortable knowing she can have mail safely delivered, and a safe place for her car.

With my sister setting up housekeeping in one bed room, I’ve assigned another bedroom to “Coralline”, and with my sister having to buy a new mattress the day after she arrived, I decided to buy a new mattress and box springs as well for the bed “Coralline” will have so we won’t have to share my bed anymore; with my sister being home for now it was easy to have those items delivered, later this afternoon we’re going to Wal-Mart and then Target to see what kind of bed spread and linens they have for both beds, so much better than using the sleeping bags.

My sister told me how the delivery men were re-acting to the house, she can be a little “stinker”, she set up an audio device to project the sound of a lion roaring, so when the men were carrying the first mattress up stairs it went off and they heard that sound, one of the men said “What was that?” and Sis said “Oh that’s just Kitty Kat, he’s hungry, but don’t worry, I’m going to feed him”. (Did I tell you she can be a “stinker”?) After they had delivered the second set, Sis gave them a tip and the audio roar went off again and Sis said “I really better hurry and feed him; he gets so cranky when he’s hungry”.

Sis told me “You should have seen their faces, one of them had that look that says ‘Feet don’ fail me now!!’, I wish I had a video camera.”

My sister does love to do mild practical jokes on occasion, she has a friend of that does mechanical and electrical set ups for haunted houses, and I can see where her mind is going, frankly I’m following along the same lines.

I was glad that new mattress arrived it seems that when “Coralline” has a bad dream she’s a bit of a ‘thrasher’, I’ve already been awaken from a sound sleep several times with her hand smacking my face. I was not aware that she suffers from bad dreams, I did ask her about that and some of them are vivid, it’s possible that the stress of being in an accelerated class can take its toll on a young mind. When she wakes from them she clings to me very frightened and I sooth her saying she’s safe, she relaxes and falls back to sleep, but the next day is apologetic about waking me up so abruptly.

I’ve talked to her Mother about this and at least she is going to see what can be done to help her. Perhaps being in a less stressful classroom situation might help, but we don’t want her mind to be bored either.

“Coralline” had another bad dream last night, I and my sister quickly went to her room to comfort her, and she relaxed and fell asleep, this morning again she apologized for waking us last night because of her nightmare, but I told her how one time when my sister was at a friends house for a sleepover, so Mother and I were watching a scary movie on T.V., it was “The Haunting” with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, what scared us was not what we saw but what we didn’t see, I was 17 at the time and was so scared I had to sleep with Mother, but I told my niece that the reverse can happen when Mother was so scared from seeing the opening scenes of that Steve McQueen movie “The Blob” that we left the theatre and she had to sleep with me.

My niece laughed at that and relaxed about the whole thing. My sister said she didn’t know that and I told her “Well I didn’t see the reason to mention it” but privately we hope that with our niece being in a good class environment but with less stress will help with her nightmares.

Last night my sister and I had the pleasure of watching our niece dance down the bedroom hall way in her nightgown as she twirled along enjoying her environment with the purple wall paper with the gold pattern designs and touching the individual wall lamps after each twirl, happily humming a tune. My sister said it reminded her of her daughters at that age. I have to confess if it wasn’t for photographs I’d have to wonder if we were ever young.

The burdens of adulthood can be so exhausting at times. But now with the situation with “Coralline” both my sister and I can, in a way, relive the discoveries of becoming Goth. But for children now a days it is so much harder, my sister is going to talk to her children to see what sort of stresses and difficulties children are facing now a days. In many ways I would not envy being a child growing up in today’s world. My sister and I are hoping we can give some protective mechanisms for our niece.

And Hostess Cupcakes is no more, another tradition gone. ***sigh***

Well they are ready to go shopping, and one more trip to the storage unit for today. We do fear that the stores will already be crowded, so it will be take out dinner tonight.

Family, relatives and "Coralline"~~~~

Well Darklings,

My 3 day weekend did not go quite the way I was expecting. Not that I had anything really planned, Doyle has an assignment, which will be intensive, so I won’t be seeing him very much, I thought I was just going to do a few things and generally putter around.

But Friday morning at work(Just at the start of the 3 day Veteran's Day weekend), I got two phone calls that changed a few things. I was planning on going to “load up” on Duraflame logs and tea lights (easy to do anytime) but first I got a phone call from my sister and she’ll be flying in Monday evening, a bit sooner than expected but still I’m very happy about it.

Resourceful Sis, managed to get a flight out to Texas and from there to Las Vegas, where she stayed for the weekend enjoying the hedonistic sights of “Sin City”, sort of a mini-vacation. Then she hopped a flight out Monday evening to my local airport, so I had the fun of picking her up at about 8 p.m. and getting her settled into my home, I really didn’t mind and the timing was good since I had Monday off as a holiday (Veteran’s Day).

But things got a little complicated for me, because the 2nd phone call was from my Brother he of the 3 jock boys, sports enthusiast wife and very quiet daughter. I’m sure you can see where this is going, but if not I’ll fill you in.

I’m an Auntie, and one calls upon Auntie’s when the “married with children” have their backs to the wall or have what they perceive is a “changeling child” Auntie’s are the hidden super hero’s, they come through in times of crisis---well at least the one’s I know do.

My brother and his wife are nice people, but they love their sports, their boys love sports, their daughter (who they were hoping to be a boy) hates sports and considers those who play sports and get a lot of money as idiots---except for Joe Montana. Why he is the exception I have no idea.

She is 10 years old and thinks of sports as the “bread and circus” of the 21st century Modern Rome, I am inclined to also think that way, but I have to admit I do love Professional Bull Riding (I always cheer for the Bulls), and Alright for those who think that is a sin---then I’ve sinned but I’m not going to apologize. I’ve seen professional Portuguese Bull Fighting without blood letting and I am amazed by it. Trust me Darklings, the Portuguese Bull Fighting done here in the U.S. is done without blooding and is darkly Gothic, darkly beautiful and ritualistic. It is also a part of my ancestral heritage.

My niece loves music mostly classical, ballet, and saw the recorded version of “Phantom of the Opera” which she considers her favorite musical and Opera (well she is Only 10), and has seen the “Twilight Movies” much to her parents objections (they thought she was seeing a Disney movie with a friend).

So she is a changeling child.

Anyway there were several big sports events coming up this last weekend that they wanted to attend but their daughter set up such a “howl” that there was no peace in their home, until my brother remembered me.

So I had Carol, whom I’ve started calling “Coralline” for the weekend, which worked out in several ways, she needed to do both a reading and writing assignment for the weekend, the reading assignment was easy, her folks dropped her off on my work doorstep 2 hours before I got off work on Friday, with her bags in tow. ***sigh*** (I do love my brother but with his wife, it has to be on her schedule)

I apologized to Coralline because I still had to work and was concerned she’d be bored but she said she has a reading assignment and needed to do a report on it, and had to check over her math homework which she had initially finished in her free time period at school. So setting her up in my area to do what she needed to do, she was content.

She is a remarkably self possessed child, gets mostly A’s with a few B’s in school she’s in an accelerated course and is reading at the 8th to 9th grade level with full comprehension. Her math is at 7th to 8th grade level and constantly improving, her science is at 8th grade level, she is like 10 going on 80, wise and sad at the same time and mildly frustrated at her immature brothers, and her sports addicted parents.

I can understand in a way, I mean my Dad liked sports he could watch a football game, was mildly interested in baseball, and basketball, but it was not the defining thing in his existence, mostly it was a way for “the men folk” to gather around watching the game on the old black and white T.V. and discuss the mis-fortunes of the world.

My brother played football in high school and college and got hooked, seriously hooked. Sometimes I and my Sister have wondered if he didn’t get switched at birth, however Mother assured us that did not happen.

I and later when my Sister came on the scene, well we had a few playmates our age but we never really felt comfortable with them, they seemed so “childish”, I guess being around grownups a lot can affect a child, but for my Sister and I it was a good thing. Later in our teens we developed a few friends our age, but again not many.

By the time my brother came around, there were lots of kids his age, and he never seemed to think beyond when he could go out and play kick-ball or something with his pals. Amazing what a difference 8 years can make.

My niece Carol aka “Coralline” seemed to be in the same situation as I and my sister, close by there were no girls her age, but plenty of boys her brothers ages and it wasn’t easy making friends in a highly competitive accelerated education classes.

So I had Coralline for the weekend and she has been tagging after me all this time, I wasn’t sure how she’d take to an Auntie who is an Elder/Elderly Goth, I informed her that the basic rule is “My House, My Rules, Homework comes first, and I need to know from your parents what you can and cannot do.” She was very willing to go along with that especially the minute she saw my house from the outside, the first words she said was “Wow!” And took to the house both inside and outside like a duck to water, even Belladonna was happy for the extra attention.

She stood in awe in front of the portrait of my Great, her Great-Great Aunt and said to me “I don’t think I’ll ever be as beautiful as her” so over dinner I told her the story of the ugly duckling who became a swan, and showed her pictures of me and my sister as children, just like her, unformed, shapeless, in pigtails, no hint of any kind of beauty.

And then as a sort of game I showed her how her beauty will develop, pinning a dress to fit her that was a perfect color for her completion and doing some light make up, and dressing her hair I showed her that in time she would become a very beautiful young lady. I told her to always remember that as she grows up, but that it’s perfectly alright to be a 10 year old girl and to have fun as a 10 year old girl.

She almost hated taking off the makeup but I informed her that part of her beauty routine was to always be clean which meant washing her face and brushing her teeth morning and evening, and other beauty things that a 10 year old can do.

She enjoyed her weekend with me and then meeting her other Auntie as well, her writing assignment was “How I spent my 3 day weekend”. It was to be done in a diary format; she said her class mates were going to be jealous. I asked her why and she said “None of them have a house that is from that movie “The Addams Family”, except with less cobwebs.

While we were waiting for my Sister’s flight to arrive at the airport, my niece asked me a lot of questions about my childhood, and I discovered through her questioning that she is going through the same type of difficulties as I went through. Granted the stresses of today are different from when I was growing up, but the issues are pretty much the same.

I gave her the “Cliff Notes” version and told her to file away what I’ve said in her mind and write down any further questions to ask me, because there was more than what I gave her in the condensed version.

She asked me if she could wear all black and I suggested to her that at her age it would be best to go with dark blue, purple, deep greens and the occasional red. She hated the cutesy baby girlie things her mother bought her, and I said she was still too young to try and look sophisticated and to enjoy being a young girl. I told her a splash of pink was fine, and when combined with black can look very nice. She asked me to ask her mother if I could take her clothes shopping in the next few weeks (right after Black Friday which I dread), but I couldn’t refuse. But I told her that I would need to get an idea of what was already in her wardrobe and we could go from there. So like two conspirators we made our plans.

I know her Mother, my sister-in-law, she comes from a family of sports enthusiasts, when I’ve tried to talk to her about music, literature etc., she always manages to bring the conversation back to sports. When she talks about her children she always has a lot to say about the boys and their achievements, when it comes to her daughter she says that she’s happy she gets good grades in school and is never a problem but hates sports and my sister-in-law has admitted to me in a recent conversation that she doesn’t understand her daughter and has no idea how to really deal with her.

I suggested to not force sports on her as her interests were in another, more artistic direction. And “Corallines’” Mother keeps asking where did that come from, well Duh! Look at her Aunties….***sigh*** I did tell you that I ‘like’ my sister-in-law.

Then again she gets so wrapped up in the boys’ lives that it seems she doesn’t have time to spare for her daughter. I think this is something I’ll need to talk to her about in depth. Even for an Elder/Elderly Gothic Auntie there are boundaries and I need to see what they are.

When my Sister and I dropped our niece off at her parent’s house we made arrangements with her parents for her to spend the Thanksgiving break with us, even though we’d be at my brother’s for Thanksgiving Dinner, which promises to be very interesting. I told her we would see about the Christmas break.

She asked her parents if they could watch the first “Addams Family” movie for their movie night and they said “Sure, why not” since her brothers had been choosing the movies for the last 2 months, all sports oriented or the “Jackass” movies.

My brother and sister-in-law do not suspect what is slowly developing for their youngest. If nothing else my niece finally felt she wasn’t an outsider in this family, that they were the outsiders and we (my niece, sister and I) were “perfectly normal”, “Crematorium” Kitchen and all.

I do know this ‘Coralline’ is thinking like my sister and I did when we would make plans to do our brother in, only she has to contend with 3 brothers who are older. The good thing is I told her that it would be wise to stop the planning, that when her brothers are grown up they could become useful in many ways. She had not thought about that, which made me smile.

And now she has met her other Auntie whom she has heard about but never met until now. My sister and I think this is going to be “a good thing.”

Happy Halloween 2012~~~~~

Happy Halloween Darklings,

I'm taking a short coffee break here at home,  and finishing putting up the last of the outside decorations.

I'm hoping that it will hold off raining long enough for our young trick or treaters to get lots of treats.

I'm having a few friends over tonight for various munchies and to watch a spooky movie or two, depending on how late they wish to stay.  But I know they will want to stay and watch the first movie  "Poltergeist",  I have two choices for the 2nd movie either the upgraded version of "The Exorcist" or "Amityville Horror"  I think we'll have to cast a vote on the 2nd one.

The one thing I like about my Kitchen and pantry is it's large, and I have two ovens to heat and bake things, as well as a large microwave,  so having done a run to Costco yesterday afternoon and also raiding Nob Hill Foods and Safeway, I have lots of goodies to serve   as well as several bottles of Vampire Wine,  Everyone is coming in costume but I told them to make sure the costumes are something they can be comfortable in.

One of my friends is here now baking "Black Velvet" Cake,  she does a wonderful job, so once the cake is cooled and decorated and safely under it's glass cake dish, she is going home to take care of somethings and then I'll see her later at the party.

Last night Doyle gave me an early Halloween present.   Yes Darklings you can give presents on Halloween if you like.  One was a tiny "hurdy-gurdy" music box and when you crank it it plays "Grim, Grinning, Ghosts" the theme from Disney's Haunted Mansion.  I'm going to take that with me to work on Friday

The other is the Betty Crocker Halloween Cookbook!!!  I love both of his gifts and with the cookbook I can add more Halloween recipes.   Lovely things that I can make all year round.

Doyle, being practical, said that anything that is not heated and eaten we can have for dinner for the next 4 or 5 days, maybe, but my friends can be a very hungry group.

I look forward to Halloween every year, the only thing that can make it a little disappointing is if it rains,  of course back East it must be very sad for a lot of young people because of the Hurricane Sandy,  my friends and I are going to take up a donation to send to one of the agencies that will be assisting those that have been displaced by the storm, we're not sure yet which one but one of my other friends is looking into it.

And you my Darklings can do the same,  if you are going to have a party tonight, set aside a "Cauldron" to take donations to aid those who need help from the storm, look up a legitimate agency, like the Red Cross and see what you can do.   It will be a wonderful Treat for those that received a horrible Trick from the Storm.

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween.

Pumpkin Spice Latte and Perfection~~~

Oh Darklings,

I do love Flash Drives to write down and save my thoughts so I can upload them at a later time.

And I’ve been here at work since 6:30 a.m. so I can leave early today, I’m taking a break to upload a number of my thoughts and sip my wonderfully perfect Fall cup of coffee.

Sometimes something comes along and you see it, read it or taste it and you know there is something about it that’s so right.

First~~~~

I was taking a small break yesterday I happened to flip a magazine over and saw a print ad for Patron Tequila, specifically for Patron XO Café Tequila and the ad said:

“Perfection has a Darker Side”---I thought what a perfect sentiment for an Elder/Elderly Goth.

Second~~~~~

Right now I don’t care if it’s Starbucks and I know how some people feel about Starbucks

BUT----It’s Pumpkin Spice Latte!!!!

Now I KNOW Fall is here, I’ve had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte for the season!!!
Oh so goooooood!!! And Simply Perfect.

Fleet Week, Doyle and strange fun things

Well Darklings,

Here in my area we just had “Fleet Week”, this is where the Navy shows off all it’s Toys, but also to give an understand of what is involved in running a ship as well as historical interest.

The Blue Angels, that death defying Navy squadron shows aerial maneuvers where if any one of them was a millisecond off, would mean instant fiery death. And some people go bunging jumping, it’s nothing compared to what these fly boys do.

There were ships galore all around and people just in awe of what was demonstrated, and there were protestors as well, waving their banners---Sorry Darklings, I still am with the Theodore Roosevelt philosophy “Speak Softly but carry a DAMN BIG STICK”.

Of course any one is entitled to disagree with me and that is perfectly all right, but Darklings, I know how to shoot, only once did I ever have to use my Berretta, the Perp survived and is serving 20 to life.

Many years ago my Father insisted that I learn to shoot, and that one time, that very one time I was so glad I did learn. Otherwise Moi would not be posting this post.

Going to San Francisco in a car was out of the question; what with the America’s Cup practice races, Fleet Week, the Blue Grass event, and the Ball game, driving one’s own car would have been insane.

But I have a friend in the City that has the most wonderful view and we had ring side seats, enough to have our breaths taken away. And that was just Saturday.

Sunday I felt was important to relax and take care of things; I was restless and got up early, it’s easy to do grocery shopping early. Doyle had to go to the office to do some inquiries on a case which he is handing over to an operative out of state, so I just had to make a few purchases at our local Safeway grocery store.

I love shopping on a Sunday morning, hardly any crowds and I can dawdle a bit, but with Halloween coming up I had a pleasant surprise.

I saw two bottles of wine that had strange names, one was called “Stark Raving” and it was a Red, the other was called “Curious Beasts” also a red wine. But the price was cheap, $10 on one and $13 on the other. I called Doyle on my cell and told him what I found, he thought it was a “Hoot” and said that if it was really bad we could use it for cooking and save the bottles and pour a better vintage into them for Halloween.

It was passable but nothing great, but Darklings can you imagine the look on peoples faces when you ask “Would you like Stark Raving Red?” They’d think you’ve gone mad, or better yet, insane.

But there was other little treats, I found heavy duty plastic or melmac type plates with a vampire on it and the words “Just a nibble” I found it so exquisitely delicious, they are fine for dishwashers but not for microwaving, as well has heavy duty plastic glasses that say “Pick your Poison”. So perfect for Halloween.

Of course some people would say where do you have the space for all of that? I’m lucky in that my Great-Aunt’s house has what is called a Butler’s pantry---this is different from a “Food pantry”. Here all the serving pieces and better china and silverware is kept. But it also has storage for day to day dish wear as well as well as Seasonal things. So that is where it will be kept, but Doyle is suggesting that we may want to have it for daily common use, given our darkly inclined natures.

Some of you have asked me “Who is Doyle and how does he factor into your life?”

I met Doyle many, many years ago while I was in my 2nd year of college, I mentioned him but not by name in a much earlier post, where he met my Granny and learned from us what real evil and Satanists are, not that Granny or I were or are evil or even Satanists, but he, at the time was being a poser and Granny set him straight by meeting with a real Satanist (I know my family was and is a strange group of people).

This fortunate meeting set him on his course to become a police officer, where he eventually dealt with very strange cases dealing with drugs and homicide and bizarre things. I introduced him to his future wife and was Maid of Honor at their wedding, they were my friends for many years, having helped at times with emergency baby sitting duties and then helping through the trauma and grief of his wife’s final illness.

His children are grown and are involved in either police or forensic work and they have children of their own, and I am their unofficial “Auntie”.

Doyle does not live with me, he has his own apartment, several years after his wife’s death he was thinking of selling the family home but I suggested to him to consult with his children about this possible decision. End result is one of the children bought the house and many major family dinners and events are still being held there with the house bustling with the sound of children and young teen’s energy.

Doyle flits between my home and his apartment, depending if he needs either to serious concentrate on a case he’s working on or needs his space from time to time or when he wishes or wants to be around me if I so choose. He keeps several changes of clothing and some of his toiletries as needed are here.

But he is his own person as am I, however there have been times when we were so glad to have each other in our respective lives. One time at my old apartment some demented person had cut my phone lines, fortunately I had my cell phone, I called Doyle who advised I call the police, I could only surmise who would have done the deed but without any visual evidence it could not go any further, since my apartment was one of a half dozen in an old court, Doyle set up a surveillance camera that was carefully hidden but pointed at the phone lines, and we caught the person.

As I said he was demented, kept claiming that I was sending ultrasound waves to his apartment to scramble his brain, it was determined he was a danger to himself and others and was place in an institution for a period of time.

Fortunately I moved to my current home before he was recently released, the sad thing is his parents kept paying the rent on his studio apartment, so he had a place to go back to, and from what I’ve heard he’s targeted another person who has moved into my old place. I feel sorry for them.

Doyle helped me move and we keep tabs on each other. A sort of comfortable relationship, as one friend of ours has said I’m a little bit Goth and he’s a little bit Night Hawk.

Of course he can’t be with me all the time as he is now a private investigator, since he retired from the police department after 30 years, so I remain independent and very much my own person, which is what I prefer. But as my Father use to say, “its always nice to have someone watch your back.”

What Television program does an Elder Goth watch?

I was asked "What T.V. programs does an Elder/Elderly Goth watch or has watched?"

Well Darklings,

I have to confess I do not have cable, satellite, or go on Hulu or what ever means that people use to watch their programs or films.  And for you overseas readers of my blog,  the programs I’m going to mention have been shown here in the United States, but you might be able to find episodes on the internet.

Being an Elder/Elderly Goth and determined to keep some things in my life simple, I remain firmly using the old-fashioned Antenna reception, even if it has gone digital.

Darklings you have to remember I grew up at a time when Television was in its infancy, with programs such as Superman, Hopalong Cassidy, Howdy Doody, the Lone Ranger, Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond, Milton Berle, Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, Perry Mason, just to give you an idea.

And for some reason even today, I stubbornly remain fixed with Antenna reception, I mean why I should have to PAY to watch programs when I can get it for free, something that a number of people seem to forget, or wait for something to down load.

One thing I do remember, I always enjoyed best programs that talked about mysteries, ghosts, and hauntings, anything that was other worldly.  It was, in a way, a form of storytelling, and I enjoyed that as well when we had family gatherings.

It never failed, one family member or another would tell something funny, sad or spooky about an event or experience either by them or a friend or a long dead family member.

These stories I managed to write down, the funny ones were like some of Mark Twain’s stories as narrated by Hal Holbrook.

So sitting down either in front of the radio (there still were radio programs going on in the 50’s) or in the evening in front of the Television for our session of “storytelling” was a wonderful way to relax.  But that did not prevent us from having family fun night, because there usually was an evening in which there was nothing of interest that was the nights we’d played games or put puzzles together.

The only time we didn’t watch either Television or play games was during Easter, from Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday, no Television nor games, we could read books, but not comic books, I could color in my coloring book, and not until Easter Sunday could games be played.  I remember Grandma being very strict, no Television until after Easter Sunday and no radio unless it was on a classical music station, which made the men folk very unhappy, so they would sneak over to a neighbors’ house to listen to what ever baseball or football game was playing.

Frankly I enjoyed the enforced quiet during that time, it gave me a time to think, reflect to even talk to my parents about family and things, sitting out on the back porch looking at the garden watching the birds come to the feeder or taking a bath or a drink in the bird bath, and I still prefer the quiet to this very day.

But what programs did I watch?   Well I’m going to focus on the ones that were spooky and perfect for the Elder Goth.

Let’s start with Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond, this ran from 1959 to 1961 and all the stories had something to do with something supernatural

The Adventures of Ellery Queen—there were 4 T.V. productions, the one’s I remember is Murder is my Business and then two others in the late 1950’s and early 1970’s and always with a twisted solution.

Danger (T.V.) this was psychological suspense—I do not have any idea if there are any surviving episodes.

Science Fiction Theatre with Truman Bradley---I loved all the persudo science as presented in these stories, I rank it right up there with One Step Beyond.

The Addams Family---need I say more---there were times when I wished the Addams were our neighbors although my Mother would have been slightly concerned but not too much.  She always said that they appreciated family values even if they were slightly skewered.

Outer Limits ---“We control the Horizontal, we control the vertical….”

Thriller with Boris Karloff---“I promise you this will be a thriller…” and a wink and some of the stories would just blast you out of the water.

You Asked for it (from the 50’s and 80’s)- -- “Remember ‘You Asked For It!’”  some of the things they showed like a woman kissing a cobra, that was part of a ritual, not fake either.  (A side bar on this)  Some years later a friend of mine who deals in books on magic managed to get 16 mm film of almost all of the “You Asked For It” episodes, including the one of the cobra kissing woman, he said that a team of anthropologists were very interested in that episode as it was a verified ritual to bring rain and there were very few filmed segments of it and it was no longer being done.

And there were The Munsters ( I wish I had bought the dolls) , Creature Features, Dark Shadows (T.V.), Ghost Story/Circle of Fear (not to be confused with a book of the same name),  In Search Of…., The Magician, Mission Impossible, Man From Uncle, Blacke’s Magic, Friday the 13th (TV.), Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Dark Side, Night Gallery, Twilight Zone,  Unsolved Mysteries, The Sixth Sense (T.V.), The “X-files”---oh that was a winner

Of course we cannot forget “Kolcheck the Night Stalker”, everything stopped when this one came on, my Mom and Dad would talk about the stories that were presented and they’d tell me about what they had heard, so some of the stories on this program were based on legends or known myths.

But when my folks passed away, it was sad for me, I became depressed, I really had no interest in things, no one to talk to who understood these things, not even my siblings, it took me a long time to find other like minded people besides my Great-Aunt, until years later when “Supernatural” appeared on the independent channel, then things got interesting with their satiric take on the old legends.

I’ve found that many of the current programs are boring, all this “reality T.V.” is not “reality” to me, but a forced exaggeration of bad manners and manipulation.  And the vampire TV. programs, again “boooorrrriiiinnngggg” geared to teens and pre-teens.  Nothing I, as an Elder/Elderly Goth, could really “sink my teeth” into.

Since I do not have cable or satellite service, there is no way I can see the ghost hunting programs, until they come out on DVD, and I buy them out of interest.  And I can “tear them apart” as well, some of them, oh REALLY!!  “Dude Run!!!” and you can see the tennis shoes on the fake ghost on that program.

Those T.V. programs for an Elder/Elderly Goth that I listed were all of interest to me.  As a child my Mother never discourage me from anything that was ghostly, she always thought I should have a healthy interest in things unknown.

But Mother always made sure I watched Healthy programs like “Kukla, Fran and Ollie”, or “Howdy Doody” (please give me a break, although as a children’s program it could be fun), but Superman was always interesting and exciting (“Great Ceasar’s Ghost!”), to balance my viewing and she encouraged me to read as well.

My Dad adored the westerns and police dramas like Gunsmoke, Wyatt Earp, Tales of Wells Fargo, Wild Wild West, Dragnet, while I loved The Cisco Kid and Roy Rogers,  some of the comedy radio programs transferred over to television like George Burns and Gracie Allen, The Jack Benny Show, Amos and Andy and of course Ed Sullivan.

One show that my Granny loved to watch was “Life is Worth Living” with Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, I’d watch it with her and we would talk about those spiritual matters that Sheen brought up.  I learned about Death from Granny, she told me that the greatest gift was being able to die with dignity.

But please remember, television was not the focus of our lives, it was simply an attachment which we could ignore if we choose and there were evenings when we so choose to ignore it.

Those were family evenings, we’d play games, either board or card games, or put puzzles together and during all that we’d exchange what was happening in our individual spheres, Mom would mention if a repair that needed to be done, or an event that was coming up, my sister or brothers would mention a movie they’d like to see or something at school, Dad would be talking about finances (we’ll see if we can budget for it), and when we had other relatives over visiting it would almost always turn to something wonderfully spooky.

My Uncles and Aunts (I loved my Uncles but the women they married were pains in the you know what) lots of time they would talk about my Great-Aunt (whose home I inherited) and in scandalous tones, I felt that a lot of what they talked about was exaggerated.  Although there were times I felt that my Great-Aunt was a little like ‘Prendergast’ the character in the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child novels.  And when I met her finally, I adored her, although she was honest with me about her personality.  Yes she could be abrasive and manipulative, but in a way that was very helpful.

When she heard that Mother had passed away she was quick to call me and tell me that I was not alone, and it helped me get over the worse of my depression.  I’ll never forget her saying to me “One never gets over the loss of a loved one, one never gets over the loss of a loving parent, only through the passage of years can we even begin to deal with it and even then, when you least expect it we suddenly feel that loss all over again, but then my Dear, That is Love.”   That helped.

Now with ME-TV and RETRO-TV (here in the United States) can I begin to experience some of the pleasures of those old television programs and also Thanks to DVD’s  I am not trapped by the vulgarities of “reality shows” or paying for service, nor cramped by the down loading of HuLu.

But I am always on the hunt for programs or episodes that can send a thrill down my back, more recently I’ve been enjoying “CSI: Las Vegas” and “CSI: New York”, the “CSI: Miami” was interesting until they took a vendetta twist that bored me to death (Yawn).  And “Castle” is a fun program for an Elderly Goth, “Criminal Minds” there is something about going into the depths of depravity of a twisted mind that is morbidly fascinating,  “NCIS” (the original) while not a convoluted as “CSI”, has it’s moments, I think I love the characters of Ducky and the Perky Goth Girl. “Bones” of course I enjoy for its forensic information.  Of course “Supernatural”, but I always thought it was better dealing with haunted legends, going on the Angel course, well I’m not sure where that will end up.   “Nikita” a wonderfully dark spy program, I never know what she is going to do next, but it is the villainess of the piece that I like even better.

One program that I had hoped would continue was “Alcatraz” I really liked the dark psudo-science fiction in that, but it was never given a chance to develop and lift off.

I never discount the informative programs that one sees on our Public Broadcast station such as “Nova”, or our entertaining ones like “Life on Mars”, “Foyles’ War”, “Inspector Morse” and “Midsomer Murders”.  They can be a lot of Food for thought for an Elder/Elderly Goth.

But if one wants to be completely mundane---“Big Bang Theory”,  I have never laughed so hard at a comedy in ages, thoughtful, educational, frustrating with Sheldon Coopers’ attitude, but wonderfully balanced by his Mother’s practical if overboard Christian sensibility---I think where she talks about the Christian Cruise she’s going on was a Hoot with “Gunning for Gun”---where you write your sins on a clay pigeon, spring it and then shoot it down;  the “All You Can East Last Supper” Buffet;  and of course the “Jonah and the Whale Watching” tour, the program is a microcosm of over-thinking, self-centeredness and practicality, as combined by all the characters.

Far better than that stupid comedy about 4 self centered, unthinking people that talk about and do nothing called “Seinfeld”, I know there are people who are “Seinfeld” fans but if I knew people like that I would immediately remove them from my life---they are dangerous---to other people.  The only time the program was even remotely humorous was when the character of ‘Jackie Child’ appeared, as played by Phil Morris.  His development of that character was wonderful.

So what will the new television season bring to this Elder/Elderly Goth??  I honestly don’t know Darklings, but ‘stay tuned’ as they say.

Couldn't do what I wanted to do***sigh***~~~

Well Darklings,

Sometimes fun comes ahead of work and so I didn't do what I was planning to do on my blog.  Yes, Bad, Bad Girl.

Well it all started when I took Belladonna for her walk, I ran into friends told them what I was planning to do Saturday which was fine.   And today---well "Forget about it" is all I can say.

Saturday we got together at my place and in my Vintage 1940's Ford we went to the Farmer's Market, Oh Heaven!  Is all I can say Oh Heaven, lovely fruits and preserves, yum!  Then I dropped them off at their place on my way home, did some more shopping, stocked my pantry, put the Bay leaves on the shelves, and grinned.

My friends came and picked me up Saturday evening and took me to a "Psychic Party",  sort of a pre-Halloween event,  anyway our hostess introduced us to this medium who then had us do psycometry, for us to read what was in a sealed envelope, to give our impressions.  It was very interesting.

But I was cautious because I've heard of "cold readings" so I made sure that I never said anything personal about me or my family.   There was about 25 of us and then after a bit the medium gave readings for each one of us.   I took special pains to not have my face reveal anything.  But this medium gave me a very personal reading, like what my future life choices are, family members who have passed on.

I was surprised about the accuracy in her readings---it seems that she lives back east in Cassadega, Florida and was visiting some spiritualist churches around here.

Of course I didn't get home until late, slept in this morning, went to the church rummage sale and found a lovely piece of garden statuary, it's a good thing I was driving the Civic,  it was heavy.  I'll have my contractor take it out later this week.

But again my friends called me up and invited me over to their house, even came by and picked me up, Belladonna went with me of course, and we spent the afternoon talking about what had transpired the evening before.  I have to say the paranormal and the occult have always interested me.   My friends are also curious as well, and have discovered through their hostess, who is a friend of theirs that there is going to be another "psychic demonstration" next Saturday evening at a Spiritualist Church, so out of curiosity we are going to attend.

I've been to these events before, and since my "boyfriend" Doyle has done what was commonly called "Bunco" or dealing with "con artists" he's going to be attending as well, although he said that when its sponsored by a Spiritualist Church they tend to be "honest" in their own way, no cons but people who want to believe in life after death.

So it seems I'll be looking into another "dark side" of life, and that is life after death.  I'll let you know what happens Darklings.

Later.

End of the Week Catch up and ideas....

Hello, Hello My Darklings,

I am so finally glad to be home after a long, long day at my job.  Had to be there at 7 (Oh My God it's to D*&%##  early)  A.M.  Sorry Darklings I do have to self censor, one never knows who is underage viewing this site.

But considering that many under 18 year olds have heard worse, I'm not about to perpetuate any further filthy words---even at work the worse I say is "Fudgesickle!!"   Part of the problem is we have a "born again christian" in our midst who put out a "curse" box and we have to put a coin in for each curse word we say.

Of course she's upset with me because I say "Fudgesickle!!" and she can't fine me  because it's a proper word.   And now the rest of the work force has adopted that as well.

For instance "Pound Cake",  "Oreos",  "Cupcake",  "Bleep, Bleep",  "Bleeping",  "Fudge, Fudge, Fudge---BROWNIES!!!"     Then we have to ask are they being served?   My favorites are "Applesauce" and really down and dirty but clean  "Kiss my Grits!!"  even better "Osculate my Glutious Maximus!"

We have one co-worker who has learned to curse in Latin...So our Born again Christian isn't getting any coins for her 'curse box' so  she can't donate to her church---which sometimes I think of as the Church of the Airy-Fairy Fluff Bunnies---which is really an insult to Fluffy Bunnies,  especially Bunnicula, my neighbor daughters pet bunny.  I think the little girl is secretly Goth but she hasn't released it yet.

Sorry Darklings, I am being silly, but it is soooo good to be home.  Again our weather is warmishly mild, reminding me of my upcoming vacation---which I am soooo looking forward to.

I am trying to type this but Belladonna my sweet little four legged darling is demanding my attention,  well I'll take her out for a walk in a little bit and then it's "Little Caesars" for her.

I've had some fun in my search for more information on the Vera West Mystery and found only tiny snippets which I will add to my "Mystery of Vera West" Page hopefully this weekend.

But right now I have received in the mail my huge  (and I do mean HUGE) September 2012 issue of Vogue magazine---the poor postman must get a hernia lugging that magazine it is SO huge,  it is mostly ads but I enjoy it as it shows what the upcoming possible styles are coming out.  And as Elder/Elderly Goths we can pick and choose the best of the best out of the worse---I am glad to see that a lot is leather and corporate looks, all wicked and sleek in its own way.

So Darklings if you don't subscribe do go out and buy the September issue of Vogue---Frankly Darklings, only the September and March issues are the one's worth getting, you can forget the rest of the year.

And be on the watch for Vanity Fair as well.

I also received in the mail my complete Autumn issue from Victorian Trading Company and there are some dresses and coats I am dying to purchase,  it will be worth it.

I've talked to my contractor who has been helping me renovate my Great-Aunt's home and it is shaping up nicely.  I told him about my plans for a freezer in the pantry and he made sure that the electrical outlet in there is capable of handling the load.  So I took one day off this week to go with him to shop for one and we found one that is perfect,  an upright so nothing will get buried, with just the right capacity to hold things for two people,  it is also an energy-star saver as well and is just the right size to fit in the spot in the pantry.
He delivered it and set it up so it looks like I'm in business.

Tomorrow I'll have Belladonna stay at the Doggie Day Care and I'll be doing some serious shopping,  one thing my contractor suggested is I buy these large folding crates and cloth coolers, that way anything frozen or refrigerated will stay frozen or cold for a long time, especially if I have a lot of errands.  A very good idea.

I am also going to a nearby Church rummage sale this weekend, and see what they have to offer, one never knows what one will find.

On my lunch break today I ducked into our local CVS drug store and found two nail polish colors marketed under the collective name of "Spoiled"  one color is a deep, deep blood red all ceramic looking, its called "Pick Your Poison",  the other is sort of a dark, dark blackish brown with some faint red sparkle, in a way it reminds me of dried blood, its called "Bite Me!"

And I think I have found a goth/vamp web site that has things to purchase for your home and just in time for Halloween---I can't WAIT for the "Spirit Store" to open up and see what lovely tacky Halloween goodies they offer.  Well once I have a chance to check out the initial site I'll give you my take on it and post its web site.

But Darklings, I cannot stress enough what Victorian Trading Company has to offer, including an Absinthe dispenser,  yes the green fairy of liquors.

Now I must go, Belladonna is making demands upon me and I really want to have some fun during the "Twilight Hours".

Just Being Lazy~~~

Oh Darklings,

There are times when it pays to be lazy, this was one of those days.

I took the ferry in as early as possible to the city to work, worked till past 12 and then came home.

Oh that doesn't sound like much but once in a while one needs a mental health day, and I had put in for it.

It was mildly warm in my weedy back yard and Belladonna was enjoying her sniffing around and then decided to just laz a bit in the warm sun.  She was so relaxed that it gave me an idea.

I called the Claremount Resort Spa to see if I could get in for their dinner hour and I can,  and I've also booked for spa treatments and a mani-pedi this weekend.

I know it sounds so indulgent, but Darklings, how can you be a "Queen of the Night" if you do not indulge in something even a little hedonistic.

One of my Darkling friends says that her indulgence is to have a mani-pedi, then to go to the See's Candy store and buy a 1 pound box of chocolates and slowly devour them over a weekend---she only does it every 8 to 10 weeks, lots of times she doesn't even finish the box so she'll have one piece of chocolate before retiring for bed, then when the box is empty no more until she goes and gets her next mani-pedi,  the rest of the time she is so good.

Another friend told me that she loves getting a massage, she doesn't do it very often maybe once in 3 or 4 months, but for her it's like being on a short vacation.   Another indulgence is aromatherapy, trying different scents to achieve a perfect mind set.

Another friend of mine goes star watching with some friends of hers,  they pack one of those small tents and folding chairs and bed rolls, they look through their telescopes and she just looks at the sky and has her ear buds on listen to soothing music on her recording device as she views and marvels the night sky,  it's even better when there's a meteor shower.  It during that time she feels one with the night and she tries to bring that feeling into her home.

And for all you night lovers, that is something you may want to consider, finding the perfect place to watch for meteors, away from the ambient city lights,  now don't do it alone, go with some friends, or find a group that does it.  Sit back watch and be one with the night.

Now Darklings,  I'm going to get dressed and go to my personal dinner date.

Consider being lazy Darklings, its a wonderful idea.

Goth my Ride~~~~

Well Darklings,
One of the last vehicles that an elder Goth should ride in (with the exception of an ambulance) is a Hearse, unfortunately one is usually not aware that you are riding in a hearse unless you are a spirit or own a classic vintage hearse.

Which brings us to what type of car should an elder Goth drive, Hmmmm well it depends upon one’s pocket book and how strange one wants to be.

Frankly I’d love to own a Hearse, drive it around with a coffin in the back, just to freak out the “Muggles”. But buying, restoring and owning a Hearse is not an easy thing. You have to be a dedicated Hearse owner for such an undertaking.

To quote one Funeral Car owner:

“Having a funeral car is not easy, the hearse car is very big, and so you will have to adjust your self for driving a mini-van size car. It’s also hard to maneuver in u-turns and narrow roads. And it will take a long time to find big enough parking spaces. But you are a hearse driver, the deads can wait.

By driving the most gothic car in the world, you can expect the same remarks as you get from people who don’t like or understand the gothic subculture. Some of them doing it because they think that you are a real funeral driver, other will mock or look at you like a freak. The best way to deal with it is to scare them off. Tell them gothic things, like you love the smell of dead corpse instead the car air freshener, or that you are out for digging graves.

The funniest thing you can ever do is to tell them that you have a PhD = Professional Hearse Driver.”

I like that “PhD= Professional Hearse Driver”. Even a bumper sticker that says “My other car is a Hearse”, I really like that, it suits my perverse sense of humor.

The first thing one has to consider is income; owning a car, any kind of car is not cheap, monthly payments, upkeep, gasoline, insurance, licensing, smogging, cost of parking lots, garaging your vehicle, your own driver’s license. And a Hearse does use up a lot of gasoline.

Even if you buy your car 2nd hand or gently used, you have to take into account all those factors, plus any repairs not mentioned or covered by the previous owner.

I have a friend of mine who purchased 2nd hand a 1991 Camero convertible, it was a bit of a concern for her to buy a car nearly 20 years old, but there was something about it that she liked. The engine had been completely re-built 2 years previously and it had not been driven hard since the re-built, so she had her mechanic check it out from stem to stern, and yes there were a few things to fix, before it would be street legal, it was tested to see if it would pass smog and it would, and it was in need of serious paint and interior work, but her mechanic was comfortable with it.

So she purchased it upon her mechanics say so, she started with all the “things” to make it street legal and to insure it was running perfectly, the next thing she was debating was to have it painted, it was at one time a sort of funky maroon, but she had it taken down to the body, had body work done to it, including chroming the bumpers and such, then she had it painted black, several layers of black with a high gloss finish. (She had to re-register it with the new color), replaced the convertible cloth to black (it was white –more like dingy grey), but then the interior needed some serious thought.

She had the interior painted black with black leather type upholstery, but with the piping done in red, blood red. The carpeting was also in black, as well as the steering wheel and column, the gear shift handled needed to be replaced so she had it done with a chrome skull, the locking buttons were also chrome skulls. For some reason on the back bumper was a trailer hitch, but since she knew she wasn’t going to be towing anything she put a Skull on it with the eyes that light up when the brakes are applied.

Now she could have left the front grill as it was but instead she ordered a custom one made to look like a spider web and in one corner a spider but with the body made into the shape of a skull. By the way my friend is 55 years old, she laughs when she drives her car “The Black Widow” around. Frankly I love it. But her car is for around the local area, she has like me, a more basic car, a black Honda Civic, very dependable and reliable.

Some people would go with a Black BMW, and paint blue flames or put blue, or purple neon lights underneath, but it all depends upon the limitations or restrictions as placed by the local law. Don’t go so over the top that you could get pulled over.

As I said like my friend I do have a dependable black Honda Civic for long drives out of town, only because both she and I can afford to maintain two cars.

What is my Goth Car? I have a 1940 Ford Sedan, all in high gloss black, it’s interior is a very dark grey with maroon piping, I also found a pair of hanging vases that some of the limo cars that were used to transport the family to the cemetery would have had mounted in their interior, that was discontinued in the mid 1950’s so those were a find and I had them installed. The poor thing was a mess when I came across it over 30 years ago, it took 3 years of work and a lot of sacrificing and several 2nd jobs to get her restored. But it was worth it, when I park her I put up a sign that I found in an antique shop that said “Funeral Car”, no one touches it, because it looks incredibly other worldly. And in the vases I’ve put these beautiful fake white orchids that look incredibly real. Some of the looks I’ve gotten are really funny.

I have the original AM radio that works but I installed underneath a small cassette deck that plays tapes of funeral music or Gothic chants, so with a flick of a concealed switch I can go from radio to cassette in an instant.

Years ago I had hoped to be able to get my Grandmother’s car, a 1940 black Buick but she willed that to my brother, who takes very, Very good care of it, he and his wife are members of the Art Deco Society and love to dress up like a gangster and his Moll.

So when I came across the Ford at a price that was a steal I leaped at it.

Now your Goth car or van does not have to be painted Black, it can be the darkest possible blue or purple, even a blood red if you like, one older Goth that I know has her BMW with a white pearlized paint job, it gives the car a very ghostly otherworldly effect, and she has the interior all white, it had to be special ordered and she had the money to have it done. But remember as with any car you want to Goth up it all depends upon what sort of accessories you want to add to it, keeping in mind that it has to be street legal.

One younger Goth person I know has a Dodge panel Van, he fixed up the interior with black upholstery for the two front rider seats, in the back he has a couch that looks like an open coffin that one can sit in like a couch, along with beautiful hanging lights, that he puts candles in when it’s parked, it comes with a gothic style table, and includes a cooler than can run off a battery or portable generator to hold food and chilled white wine. It almost looks like a romantic gypsy caravan in a way; as part of his carry accessories, he has a customized E-Z up to extend the seating area to hold a portable gas bar-b-que if needed, or any extra chairs.

He uses it mostly for outdoor gatherings, like star gazing especially when the meteor showers are active in the sky. But sometimes he goes to outdoor pagan events and sets it up with the E-Z up tent and does tarot readings.

It’s painted Black but he has an image of a castle in the moonlight painted on one side and a mini-stain glass window mounted on the inside of his side door.

I have to admit that it’s hard to describe, one would have to see it to enjoy its sensuous interior.

Then we have to consider cars that were driven by the Munsters, I know there were two of them. Also we need to throw in Elvira’s convertible and the Batmobile and the Green Hornets’ Car and also the possessed car from that horrible horror film “The Car” (I mean the film was terrible but the car was just thrilling).

Here are some links for Gothmobiles, they are mostly in the UK but it will give you an idea: www.lavenderpillow.co.uk/Goth_Motors.html/ and www.gothiclimousines.co.uk If nothing else it will give you ideas of what you can do.

For Hearse Clubs we have our original Grim Rides at www.grimrides.com and the Hearse Club www.hearseclub.com and well as www.phantomcoaches.org/

I’m going to put these several links on my side bar for you to easily find, just to give you Darklings some idea of how much you want to “Hearse or Goth Your Ride”.
