Of A Halloween Success!!!~~~~

Dear Darklings,

Halloween was a success!!!  The rain held off giving the trick or treaters a chance to claim their candy!!!

And so was the party!!   Everyone getting into the mood and I think what helped even more was discussions about local ghost stories and people being up front and honest with any strange and paranormal experiences.

Everyone took turns answering the door to the children who were allowed into the hall to get their treats!  And seeing the place festooned with spider webs and strange people in strange costumes,
by 9:30 the door bell stopped ringing with the exception of late night party attendees.

The children had fun watching the movies and falling asleep on the cushions and such, my oldest nephew took turns with the parents to watch the little ones, until they were all finally asleep, with the exception of my oldest nephew and Coralline, they managed to stay awake for the séance and had places front row center.

And we were not disappointed, disembodied hands writing messages, floating tables, spirit bells rapping out answers, moving planchets on Ouija boards and many other ghostly phenomena. It was a huge success.

And I did have a number of people who were in no condition to drive and admitted it, so between calling taxi's and having them sleep over it was a safe Halloween.  And now finally the last of the left over cars had been claimed, and we have a lot of left over food that will tide us over this weekend.

Tomorrow evening we're going to take in a ghostly event, but because it will be in S.F. and we'll be out till late, Sis and I made arrangements to stay overnight at one of the better hotels, so we'll be dropped off by Brian, at our hotel, then take a taxi to and from the venue, stay overnight then come home by BART and Taxi.

But tonight we shall relax because oh our aching limbs, later in the week I will start removing the decorations, Doyle will slowly take down the outside decorations, already today he took down Grim and the Fog Machine, and he was so effective.

Tonight we'll have fun watching Svengoolie present "Black Friday", I have not seen that movie in ages and it will be a treat.

But for now microwaving dinner, even Elder Goths must succumb to the modern use of things, and the two extra Micro-waves were a BIG Help!

This morning being in a mindless frame of mind I happened to turn on Grit TV and they showed two episodes of Science Fiction Theater, from 1954, I remember watching these programs years ago, and found them to be both educational as well as entertaining. In one of them the strange person showed a devise called a "sonic broom" and Doyle and I saw that and we said "Oh my Goodness!  A Roomba!"

Now I'm making sure to watch this or at least record it so I can see how much did they predict that has come true.

Later Darklings---Time for me to take more aspirin.

Of Excited that halloween is coming!!! Saw Sleepy Hollow and oh the Fall season looks interesting on T.V.~~~~

Hello Darklings,

Yes!  Two posts in one day, have I gone insane???   No, I'm waiting for my ride to finish up his task, since I'm all done and ready to go, he's just finishing his notes, making sure they are correct.

And it doesn't hurt to hold back commuting home at rush hour, sometimes just waiting 30 minutes doesn't hurt.

Well I managed to get through some unfinished things and get them ready to go, I took a half hour break, and walked to the nearest CVS to get a bottle of my favorite drink with the "battery acid" taste, yes Darklings Dark cherry Coca Cola.  I don't indulge in it often but on such a humid muggy day it did feel good, I was looking for a Dr. Pepper but they were out.

And there I saw it!!!  I had to have them!!!!  I couldn't RESIST!!!!

So I bought them!!!!!

Yes My Darklings a skeleton Cat and two skeleton birds, and a skeleton wolf's head that howls' when you touch the hidden tab.  They will go so well with my skeleton dog.

I called Doyle about my purchases and he asked me "Do they have a skeleton fish?  That would go well with the skeleton Cat"   Well that is something to think about.

And they had such delightful smaller indoor decorations, I could have easily gone overboard, but there is just only so much room in my ride's car, he's got 3 boxes of books cases from IKEA and it's pretty cramped as is.

Oh Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!!!!!!  And no assembly required!

Oh for the Spirit Store to be open!!

I'm having a hard time waiting, there are times when I'm like that actress in the old Mervyn's commercial She's at the front door at 4 a.m. with her hands on the glass saying "Open! Open! Open!"

Sis and I are already planning what food we'll serve at our Halloween party, after all it will be on a FRIDAY!!!!

Are YOU prepared my Darklings?

And Doyle told me that he and Al went to the grocery store to stock up on Angry Orchards Hard Cider varieties, Hmmmm I knew his beer stock was low, so I guess it's time for the Fall Flavors.

And it's time for me to stock up on some of my favorite wines.

But I won't have to cook dinner tonight.

My Darklings did you watch the season opening of Sleepy Hollow, when I first saw the first few minutes I was puzzled and thought "did we miss something? Are the writer's cheating us?"  But no it was an illusion.  And just as exciting already.

We did see the premier of Gotham, already I spotted the Penguin and Poison Ivy, but it seems that its being told from the future Commissioner's Gordon's view point.   I love twists like that.

And I did enjoy the new NCIS: New Orleans  and Blacklist---I am on the edge of my seat with anticipation.  I did catch the premier of Big Bang and Scorpion we had to record them, so after we see the second episode of Mysteries of Laura we'll do a catch up.

So many choices and such a conflict to record and even the Originals, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Castle has not yet come out, this is going to be a very interesting Fall opener.   Football need not apply.

And now it's time to go,  my ride is ready, my boney animals are ready and I am ready.

AAArrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!! and a Fire in San Francisco and Hannibal~~~

Well Darklings,

I am frustrated, extremely so.... my poor computer is ready for "The Boneyard", impossible to upgrade, parts of it are deteriorating, and not able to really replace so I'll have to buy a new system.  Except for my printer, which is only 6 months old none of the other components will work with a new system.

What it is is that my system is so old that with it working with internet explorer is total garbage, cranky-slow-frustrating.  So to do research my IT person installed Google Crome as a stop gap, BUT I have to go to internet explore to bring up my e-mail and to do any postings with blog.spot because for some reason with my system Google Crome won't give me what I need to get into it, parts disappear.

So for research or to go to facebook its google chrome, but for e-mails and blogspot its internet explorer but to not make internet explorer my default.  Oy Vey!!!  Talk about a Rube Goldberg system.

But not having to go to work for the last few days (and tomorrow) Doyle and I have been looking for what I need, Oh decisions, decisions----I don't need anything fancy, but everything has Windows 8, which I'm told is really not a bad thing, but I'll be seeing a whole new screen to get use to.  Oh can my Model T-Ford Brain keep up with all the Ferrari's????  Well if I can crank it up a little.

But I've been looking a some tower types one even had 1Terra bit of ram----but do I need that much???

Until the IT sales person said that maybe I should look at an "all in one" save the cost of the monitor, don't have to "freak out" about wi-fi, eliminate the tower, don't have to buy a camera or speakers...HuuuHHHH????  Says I.

Well he showed it to us, and yes it's all in one, all built into the monitor, wired keyboard and mouse, camera in the frame and speakers same way, can increase RAM to 8 GB's from 4 GB's, no tower, with plug in's for UB and digital camera and my router and could convert to wi-fi, would install Microsoft word without installation costs, MacAfee virus protection, has DVD and CD player recorder, they will take out all the trial stuff and those aps I don't need, compatable with my current printer.

All for 1/2 what I was looking at.  Doyle was mentally hopping from one foot to the other like Homer Simpson (he's too dignified to do it in real time),  so I said "Wrap it up!"  But I have to wait a bit while they do what they have to do to it to make it completely mine, so I should have a new system by next monday at the latest.  So its a birthday present to myself, a bit early.  Well Doyle is going to chip in for half, the Darling.

So that is that....

And after all that excitment that Doyle went through the other Day, what happened was a horrible 5 alarm fire occured in China Basin area of San Francisco, this has been going through some serious redevelopment with apartments with busiensses on the ground floors,  one of the new buildings under construction (9 stories tall) caught fire, they are not sure what happened only the good thing is that it occured after all the construction workers had left for the day.

Doyle was visiting a client at his apartment around the block from where the new constrution was when they heard a commontion in the halls,  people evacuating from the west side of the building this was the side that was facing the fire,  Doyle encouraged his client to grab the important papers and they left the building, quickly and felt a tremendous heat,  Doyle saw the smoke rising over the buildings, he and his client walked East, away,  Doyle was glad he had taken a taxi to the client's place, what they saw was an inferno from hell,  as a matter of fact it was call the San Francisco Inferno.   At a safe distance Doyle and his client watched the fire, no loss of life, two firemen received minor injuries, one car was partially melted, the glass windows on the West side facing the fire buckled and cracked.  But damaged to the occupied apartments and the businesses was kept to a minimum, which itself is a miracle.

What the fire dept did was create a wall of water to prevent the heat and any embers from setting the near by buildings on fire, some embers did land on a roof top but was quickly put out.

Everyone was evacuated at least over night including Doyle's client, Doyle called for a taxi and set his client up in a hotel for a few days until the O.K. was given for tennants to return,  the one's who live on the west side of the building will have to stay away for a few days while crews continue to put out hot spots still burning even as I type this, and also because they are demolishing the building and all it's melted metal scaffoling.  Doyle said that it was terrifying to see a wall of flames from that 9 story building, and the S.F. Fire Department did a heroic job getting everyone out and saving the already occupied buildings.

When he came home, I sat him down and gave him a bottle of one of his chilled Ale's and said "Rest, don't think, just rest."

That day while he was escaping from a fire I was doing my jury duty stint,  Oh sitting there, waiting to be called to a court room, then going to the court room and waiting while everyone gets together, and then waiting to be called as a prospective juror, finally they came to me,  and asked me a few questions, one of which was "Do you own a gun"  "Yes"  I replied  "And I'm a member of the NRA"  ---- Dismissed and Thank you, you have done your Jury Service for the year....Thank yu, Thak yu vry much.... totally shot my day, it was a murder...would have loved to have been on that jury.   Oh well picked up some goodies at a very good Deli that I like and had an easy time for cooking, while waiting on the outcome of my ancient computer.

So my ancient computer has been cleaned up and will work for a little while, I'll retire it to do word processing until it finally gives up the ghost, maybe I'll have Coralline use it for her homework when she has to write out reports and essays, much better than waiting to use my computer.  Yes that would be a very good thing.

I don't know if any of you have been watching "Hannibal" but frankly its getting a little too grusome even for me,  I know I will never allow Coralline or her friends watch it, the convolutions and psychological aspects are to the point of beyond bizarre but just short of perverison or maybe not.  We record it to watch at a later date as Doyle likes "Blue Bloods", and then watch it early enough in an evening to discuss what its all about but after dinner for sure, of course we love "Blacklist", but it conflicts with "Castle" so that is recorded as well,  we enjoy the psychological aspects of situations but we tried "The Following" and found that it really wasn't going anywhere, and boring, why its still on is a mystery to us.  But "Hannibal"....I just do not have the words for it except that Gillian Anderson's character said it that he is too dangerous, only with the divider of the Televison screen can we be safe, but what of those in the outside world.  That is where "Hannibal" becomes disturbing.  For anyone.

Now I must go and prepare the salad for tonight's dinner.  The weather is a bit warm right now, the fake mulberry trees with their clusters of white flowers are in full bloom, to the point where the light breeze has the petals falling like fine snowflakes, in a spring wonderland,  Mom and Dad were married at the time the Snowball Trees or bushes would bloom and their petals would fall like snowflakes,  We have a picture of them in front of such a huge bush all the white blooms, surrounding and arching above them, a lovely wedding picture.  When I see the flowers blooming now I'm reminded of that, and feel a lightness of being.

Of "Sleepy Hollow" and RV's~~~~

Oh My Goodness Darklings!!!

Did anyone see the finalle of "Sleepy Hollow" last night----what a cliff hanger!  Crane is buried alive in a grave, Parrish is his and Katrina's son and has gone to the dark side, Abby is trapped in a doll house in Purgatory, Katrina is taken by the Headless Horseman, Abby's sister lies either injured or dead on the road and Captain Irving is in Jail for 2 murders he didn't commit!!!  Talk about a "Perils of Pauline" ending!!
Who is going to come to their rescue??!!

Breathe, breathe....

I'm at work and will be here all day, a long day I might add after having a holiday.  Coralline was with my sister and I all weekend and it was such a fun weekend and we had her for the full "Sleepy Hollow" last episode of its season, with a promise of it to return in the Fall,  of course Coralline can't wait, and we told her that she has to, just like one has to wait for Christmas.

Doyle called me last night from his son's house in San Diego (he waited until after "Castle") and said to me "We've got to buy the Series---no if's or but's"  and he's doing well by the way, he'll be back next Monday, and his children are doing fine.

I wish I could go into the questions Coralline was asking of us but right now I don't have time, my brother did come to pick her up, he said that he and the boy's had fun watching the 49'ers, but were so disappointed at the lost, so just to be "mean" I said to him "Whiner, Whiner Forty Niner, Go Broncos!"  and he said "YEAH!!!"   Coralline, (sweet child) just rolled her eyes and I said "You can stay with your Aunt and I during the Superbowl game, we can chase Doyle out to a friends house."

Then my Brother made a Big Announcement, he and Monica (and the boys) had been going to the RV show this last weekend and since their house is almost paid off, (it will be by Spring) they bought an RV.  It has enough space to sleep all 6 of them, and can tow a small car behind when they travel, it had been a dream of theirs for sometime and they had been working towards it.

Coralline asked if she could sneak a snake into her brother's bunks in the RV but her Dad said no it would freak out her Mother.  I love how this child's mind thinks.   He started waxing enthusiasticly about it while Coralline feel asleep on the couch, frankly I think it is for them a good thing, they love to travel even on weekends besides going to games, and I know Coralline likes to go and see new places and to do so in comfort is good and it will be good for the boys to learn how to handle an RV.

For me, give me the comfort of a 5 star hotel, with comfortable beds and gourmet meals, although as a child we did go camping so sleeping in a tent is no stranger to me.

And now its back to work.  More Anon.

Of Monday, Aviator cocktails, and a possible BART strike~~~

Hello and Good Morning Darklings,

Yes, Moi up early in the A.M.  who would have thought.  But it seems that when I wake up although the clock says 7 a.m. it Does feel like 6 a.m.  I will be so glad when Daylight Savings Time is over.  Of course Belladonna did not want to leave her nice warm bed, I still have her in her sweater and she was under her bed covers (yes doggie bed covers) so I have not forced her, she'll get up when she wants to.

I am so glad I do not work on Mondays and Fridays anymore,  I've been following the news and people thought that BART unions were going to strike today, but not----at least for 24 hours.  This whole thing is so silly and the public is fed up with the unions holding out, it seems anything to do with transportation is not sitting well with the general public.

BART management has given their best and final offer, which is more than before, and BART unions are acting coy hinting its still not enough, but from what I can detect between the verbage, I think the unions are wary of public opinion right now, the public is not on their side....AND there is a move up in Sacramento to design and pass a bill preventing state wide any kind of transit strike, I do believe that New York and at least two other states have a simular bill.

Both Unions and Management do not want that kind of bill, but I have a feeling it will pass, anything that interfers with the economy, creates chaos and grid lock now a days is not looked upon favorably.   So BART and possibly AC Transit Unions may have shot themselves in the foot.  Well that is what happens if you become too greedy.

Doyle and Sis have left for their respective offices early today,  Doyle muttering about doing background checks,  and Sis saying she'll be glad to have her house done so she can get out of her lease on her office.  And I will be making dinner.  Good Old Fashion Monday Meatloaf.  But I came across a dessert called Pumpkin Crunch, such a good alternative to pumpkin pie.  So I'll be a housefrau today, which is good, my maid service is coming in today.

And meal planning, bill paying all those wonderful mundane things to do.

Last night Doyle made Aviator cocktails, they have a sky blue color, and it is not made with Blue curaco but Creme de Violete very hard to get I understand but Doyle has his sources, it is a cocktail from the 1920's and such a floral taste almost refreshing----now Doyle said if one uses Palma Violetes or another liquor it tastes different, but he wanted to try this,  I fell in love with it, now there are a lot of receipes out there but the original is best to follow.

I asked Doyle why he wanted to try it and he reminded me of an earlier episode of "The Blacklist" where James Spader's character introduces the heroine to the Aviator cocktail---this is sort of a Hannibal character but with a slight difference, unfortunately it runs the same time as "Castle" so we record it and watch it on Tuesday right after the 6 p.m. news,  I find Spader's character devious, a manipulative, but why is his character getting rid of those he's done business with and who are very evil?  What is his motive?  It is far more enjoyable than "Revenge" which is just a fancy Soap Opera,  and "Scandal" is fine but I am not intrigued by that program as much.

What we have found is that if there are programs that run at the same time we Tivo them and then watch them during "blank spots" in the regular T.V. programing---"Blank Spots" being programs we're not interested in, since we try to have dinner at 6 p.m. if possible, one blank spot is the 7 to 8 p.m. slot. and on weekends it can extend to the 8 to 9 p.m. slot as well.

And I must confess I've become hooked on "The Good Wife" now the plot line is getting very interesting, before it bored me, but Sis liked it.  But now we have "Sleepy Hollow" "Bones", "The Originals" and our favorites, "Castle", "Blue Bloods", "Supernatural", "Big Bang Theory", "NCIS" "NCIS-LA", "CSI", "Criminal Minds", "Person of Interest",  sorry but "Elementary" has lost me,  "Hawaii 50" is still interesting but I don't think it will survive this season.  We've been checking in on "Vampire Diaries"  Sis watches it because of some of her younger clients, but its still too juvenile for me, although I think the Damon character is interesting, he reminds me of a young man I dated many years ago, always acting like a bad boy, but secretly had a good heart and did kind and helpful things for people without their knowing it.  Same green eyes--mmmmmm.

But what has Happened to "Hannibal" and "Nikita"  I didn't hear of them being cancelled.  Unless "Hannibal" is one of those 13 weeks mid-season runs.  Doyle insists that we buy the series "Foyle's War" I agree I enjoy the degree of research into the history of that program and its set design.

But now I understand there are still a few more programs to premier, oh decisions, decisions.

Now I must go, Belladonna finally rose from her bed and has done her thing and is barking at the squirrels, I guess I'll have to go and referee and the Maid Service will be here in the next half-hour, and I still have to get the inside of the house decorated for Halloween, not that I have to do much, just to get out a few things and plan the menu for the party.

Of a Busy Fun weekend, and Family situations~~~

Hello Dear Darklings,

We had such a busy weekend, and all to the good I might add. I saved our experiences and thoughts on a flashdrive and am finally able to upload it to my blog.

Coralline was dropped off Friday, by her parents and she greeted me with a BIG Hug, saying “Thank You, I don’t think I could take my brothers one more day and if it rained tomorrow and I was home with them (meaning her brothers), they would drive me crazy.” I had to agree with her on that, they don’t do rainy days very well.

When Doyle came home she greeted him with a big hug as well, and then asked if he could help her with one of her assignments, he said he’d join her, just give him a chance to put some things away and I watched her go happily into the Library.

I turned and saw tears forming in Doyle’s eyes, but he was smiling, then quickly wiped the tears away and hung up his jacket and hat. (Yes Darklings he loves to wear a fedora), then he joined Coralline in the Library, while I went and finished dinner.

Marissa was also invited to dinner and for the evening so her parents could have an evening out, it was a good thing, between the three of them Coralline’s assignments were done quickly.

I decided upon Lasagna which the girls dug into with relish, Marissa asking if she could have the recipe to give to her mother as her Mom’s although good, always seems to come out watery, I noticed that Doyle’s appetite was coming back as he asked for a second helping.

Coralline told me that she didn’t have a chance to see “Sleepy Hollow” her Dad and brothers wanted to watch something else, her mother gave in but told my brother that they were going to have to invest in another T.V. as my brother in his upside down wisdom, forgot to record the program for both Coralline and her Mother and they were unaware of a repeat of the program.

I know that because she called me the other day to vent her frustration about her husband, my brother. So I said “buy another T.V. put it in the living room, in a locking cabinet so the boys can’t get to it and keep the key on your key chain and then maybe get the boys tested for ADS or something because their behavior is becoming out rageous,” she agreed but first, was to get my brother to admit it---I said to take him to parenting class, that his testosterone attitude was not making for a happy daughter or wife.

She asked if all four of us could do an intervention. Four? Sis, me, her and Doyle. I thought it would be a very good idea and I’d talk to them about it. Ahhh another soap opera on the family will be happening soon I think.

Marissa was glad I had recorded it because she wanted to see it again “It went by too fast” she said.

Well that program has 4 fans already. It is such an interesting twist to the Washington Irving story. For those of you who don’t know it but the town of Sleepy Hollow does exist and has made the legend of the Headless Horseman a tourist attraction.

In the 1940’s Walt Disney did an animated short with Bing Crosby as the narrator and the short remained very close to the original Tale, but never tells why there is a Headless horseman. As always the Horseman has a weakness, in the original tale anyone pursued by the horseman had to cross a particular bridge over running water and the horseman cannot follow.

Later Johnny Depp did that wonderful movie on the story, only in this case if a person possessed the head of the horseman they’d control his spirit to do their bidding but if the horseman regained his head he could return to hell permanently taking the person who had the head with them.

Now this T.V. program SLEEPY HOLLOW----I like it!!! A new twist on the battle between good and evil, the back story is going be very interesting...----if they can twist up the stories about Fairy tales they can do this with the old Washington Irving story and American Revolutionary history.

The CGI on the headless horseman is perfect, none of that prop shoulders on a head, and the girls and I love the Horse it’s just as much an actor as the cast.

But one has to suspend belief on how a man who is 250 years old can adapt to the 21st century so readily and how a police department Captain can quickly say "O.K. we need this guy" but, well, they have to cram that all in within 48 minutes (have to have time for commercials) and they give the Horseman a weakness, which is sunlight.

It’s just like "Supernatural" twisting up the old ghost, monsters and angel legends. I just hope FOX doesn't sabotage it like they did with "Alcatraz" and a couple of other shows that I liked with making the programs disappear for weeks on end with Sports games. They never did allow those shows to develop their "legs".

All four of us could hardly wait for next Monday! Coralline has asked me to always record it, so I’m going to set this DVD disc aside to keep the episodes on it.

As I said, in the TV. Show sunlight weakens the Horseman, and he has to return to his dark underwater grave (which makes it hard to find him) but its important that he not regain his head, otherwise it will release the other 3 horsemen of the apocalypse. This really beefs up the story line.

And it seems that Crane and the Horseman and bonded to each other, because when Crane decapitated the horseman, the horseman sliced open Crane’s chest and while both of them sort of dying, their blood flowed out to commingle, to create a supernatural bond, giving Crane a sort of immortal life.

There are two factions of witches, good and evil, one of the good witches was Cranes wife who was burned at the stake by lies of the evil witches, the other good witch was a priest/monsignor who either managed to live a long life or was a many generations descendant, who in the opening episode tried to turn the horseman back with magick but was killed.

Crane and his 21st century partner a female police officer, finds the horseman’s head and for now is currently re- hidden. There are some symbols and such which indicated who might be on which side but I think there will be surprises. There are a few things or images that I think maybe too gruesome and intense for the very young, and may give them nightmares, which is why it’s on at 9 p.m. and not the family hour.

I promised myself to be sure to buy the series DVD when this comes out, and although Doyle thoroughly enjoyed it, he also had to be a critic on police procedures which he always does on any police procedural show, including CSI. I don’t argue with him, I just hold up my hand and he saves the criticism for the commercials time. It works.

Yes, the next day it poured rain in the morning, but Doyle drove carefully to the Vintage Expo. And we had a lot of fun, Marissa had hoped to come with us but her parents had another commitment to go to, Coralline’s eyes just popped out at all the beautiful things, she fell in love with a very dark blue cloth purse from the late 40’s or early 50’s and we found a matching hat, when I put the hat on her she suddenly looked so grown up and yet a child, we talked about the hat and purse and I decided to buy them for her for later for her to use when she’s a little older, I can tell that she will have a slim figure like her mother and I, so it won’t be a problem to find vintage clothing for her, she may even, in time be able to use mine.

But she so wants to find a suit, shoes and gloves to match her hat and purse, already a vintage maven. But I told her she is just turning 13 and is not fully grown yet, any clothing items purchased now would become too small, shoes included and she is not an adult ---YET….but I think we’ll come to a compromise.

Such an awkward age, still a child in many ways and slowly becoming an adult, her friend Marissa is still finding herself as well. I think the only thing that helps the both of them is that they are still very family oriented, Marissa doesn’t have the “problem brothers” that Coralline has, but she feels she is in competition with her older brother although her parents say to her that her talents are different and that there is no comparing, and they seem to be very good on that.

Coralline is sort of “outgunned” because she has three high energy brothers and her outlook is different, artistic, some times dreamy. While her brothers are rough and tumble, given to pranks and jokes. Fortunately her Mother is seeing the problems this can cause, but my brother is enjoying the maleness of it and forgetting there is a young girl in the house. I think he is still mentally compensating for the fact that our older brother died right at the time when an older brother was needed, and having to be in a house with two older sisters, Mother, Grandma and Dad, well Dad did make time for my brother which was good and they had their special days and times together away from female interference.

Sis and I have talked about that and we have come to that conclusion that our brother is over compensating for that loss, but forgetting that it is a situation in reverse. Yes an intervention is going to be needed. We’ll have to make plans.

Doyle found a couple of Fedora’s he liked at the Expo as well as some interesting period ties, myself, well Darklings, I found a beautiful evening gown in a very deep dark purple, the color was very flattering to my fair skin. And also a lovely 1940’s suit in Maroon with a matching fascinator hat. I know in my closet I have a matching pair of shoes and purse, gloves were a problem, but something will turn up.

Sunday was beautiful and sunny after the rain so we went to early Mass, and had breakfast out before we went to the Harvest Festival. The grounds and such were a bit soggy but not too bad. So many crafts, food, music, already it’s beginning to hint of Octoberfest. I found some things that will be perfect to put up for now and for Thanksgiving. It was just so much to take in, afterwards, we went home tired but happy.

I was glad I had Monday off, my work schedule has changed now that I’m working half time, so I was able to go through things to donate to charity while my cleaning service vacuumed and dusted, and considering my back I am so glad for their help.

Doyle told me Monday evening after he came home from his office, he was so glad we had the girls over, it has helped him a great deal.  And he told me to plan on packing my bag in a week we'll be going to Old Town Sacramento for an extended weekend, I am so looking forward to it.

Sis came home on Tuesday after having a lovely extended weekend with her family and Grandchildren. She’s planning on seeing them between Thanksgiving and Christmas, that way she says she won’t interfere with their plans with the in-laws.

Already so close to the Holidays, Harvest Fest, OctoberFest, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Dickens Fair, Christmas festivities, New Years….where has the year gone?

Of an update and an answer to a question~~~~

Hello Darklings,

I know I haven't been posting for the last few days, its been busy and I just got home from work.

Quick update---we've been having fun at different events, and work has been busy.

Trisha  on your question about Coralline receiving a card from you.  Let me ask her Mother for permission, since Coralline is my niece, so I'll need input from her first.

I'm sure she won't mind, but again I don't want to overstep my bounds, I'm sure you understand.

I recorded Sleepy Hollow again last night, I AM enjoying that show.  But I also recorded "The Blacklist" as Doyle wanted to watch "Castle"  And tonight with the Premier's of NCIS, NCIS LA, and Person of Interst as well as "Marvel: Agents of SHEILD"  I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to see James Spader's performance.

And now I must go, I have to make dinner tonight, Thank goodness for crockpots.

Of washing machines and television programs~~~

Well My Darklings,

This proved to be a most interesting expedition into laundry investigation. It maybe wise to have one’s man along and sometimes it can also be frustrating.

I was perfectly fine with going to Sears to see what they had, but Doyle, bless him wanted to check several other stores but when I asked several key questions on things like repair and delivery well they just could not provide me with “the goods”.

Finally after having a late lunch I persuaded Doyle to go to Sears, but first I had to compliment him on his “due diligence” in looking into this and offered a compromise if Sears could not provide what I was looking for.

Well they had a very nice selection and I zeroed into the Maytag’s’, of course Doyle wanted all sorts of “whistles and bells” and I was more into basic’s. Which of course had us pushing and pulling, we had to let the sales person know we were going to discuss this and would come back to him so he would not be tied up with us if there was another customer.

Finally I told Doyle “Darling, we are not washing the clothing of the Mona Lisa, we are talking sheets, towels, underwear, and other washable items, as long as it can do that I’m happy!” Doyle eventually saw the wisdom of my logic and so we selected a very nice machine in basic white, I don’t need other colors.

And we were able to find a comparable gas dryer as well. So out came the charge card (my insurance money for the replacement of them will go to the bill), arrangements were made on the delivery and installation, warranties were prepared as well as repair warranties as long as it’s a Sears purchase Sears will repair it with almost nothing out of my pocket, we even bought a new toaster (it can do bagels and muffins as well) the old one died this morning. Well when you see it go up in smoke you know it died.

I called my sister to see if she would be available to accept delivery in case neither Doyle nor I got home in time and she said she would.

Now Sis and I are waiting for Doyle to bring home Chinese take out, she was busy with her reports and I was too tired to even think about dinner, so Doyle being the gentleman that he is has gone out to find dinner.

I will get my things prepared to get ready for work tomorrow, in a way I’m looking forward to it but in another I’m sort of liking the idea of being at home, but I am concerned about being out of “the Loop” of things, of becoming to narrow in my outlook and such, of well I guess, of losing my edge.

How I feel after a month will determine my next course of action, with the weather so nice I feel a certain yearning to travel, but that will have to be on hold for now.

I’ve had a chance to see the last two episodes of “Grimm” before they took their summer sabbatical, I like it, its sort of quirky in a “Supernatural” sort of way before “Supernatural” got too serious, (but I still like the program Jensen Ackles reminds me of a younger Doyle but he has dark blond hair)

“Hannibal” is so bizarre but part of the problem is I came into the program when it was already at 8 episodes so without that back ground information it’s a little bizarre, I’m still trying to figure out Hannibal’s motives, he’s manipulating people and in some ways exacting revenge, but is he placing the “hero” in danger? I’ve got to see the first 7 episodes to really understand his motive.

I’ve just started a new program called “Motive” and you really have to watch for all the little clues, I’m not sure if this program is going to have “legs” but it is interesting. Doyle watched the first installment of “Brooklyn D.A.” he sort of likes it, but I felt it sort of weak, but then it was only the first program and well see how that goes.

Hmmm there’s a loud noise outside someone’s yelling, and it’s making Belladonna bark, we’ll have to investigate.

666 Park Avenue~~~The End???

Oh Darklings,

My heart is broken, 666 Park Avenue, a guilty pleasure of mine, has been cancelled, it seems that it could not come up enough in the ratings to have it continue beyond the initial 13 episode commitment.

And with so many stories and plot lines, and Terry O’Quinn’s character guiding the events like an evil “Daddy Warbucks” (which was the costume character that he was portraying in the Halloween episode) or perhaps a wicked diabolical New York version of “Dallas’s” J.R Ewing. (Although how could anyone top Larry Hageman’s wonderfully villainous portrayal)

I suspect on the fan fiction site there will be people writing their own tie-ins to this series, and it may develop a cult following, perhaps it will be picked up by a cable network, I hope so.

I love how rich, fabulous and evil the place is, The Drake is as much an actor as the people living in it.

But I fear that we will have many story lines dangling. And I just HATE that.

You suspect that the Donovan’s are evil but are they really evil or manipulators are they trying to control what is in the Drake, Olivia’s character loves her daughter, Garvin loves his wife, Jane and Nona’s are children of the Drake, and there are souls trapped in the Drake, as shown by the Starlings birds. You’d think that Garvin is the devil but he is able to enter a church, but a sign on the door of one of the tenants prevents him from entering.

And each of the characters are victims of their own weaknesses and hidden desires. And Victor Shaw was he just as evil or looking for revenge, yet he wanted to take over the Drake, so is the entire plot line about power and controlling the hidden “kundalini energy” that the Drake possesses as signified by the dragon symbol?

Oh questions, questions and more questions. Will we get even hints of what might happen by the 13th episode?

We shall see Darklings, we shall see.

Nails, Nails and More Nails and "666 Park Avenue"

Darklings,

I just love the colors that come out this time of the year, one never knows what colors will develop that catches one’s eye or eyes as the case maybe.

I told you earlier that Estee Lauder has come out with a green nail polish called “Viper” that I find just tingly, she has also come out with other colors that I’ve purchased to expand my “Nail Wardrobe.”

Yes Darklings, your nails need a wardrobe of colors, now granted I had said in a much earlier post,  that as an Elder/Elderly Goth one should shift to lighter almost flesh tone colors as one ages, but I’m going to do a caveat on that thought.

First as an Elder/Elderly Goth if you are in the Corporate business world then avoid the extreme colors such as Green, Blues and Yellows or Orange, even some dark purples or blacks, look then to the red colors that are the most complimentary for your hands and for being in the business world, no matter what, you do not want your potential customer to be turned off, especially if they are conservative.

But if you are retired, artistic or in a free-floating business then by all means have fun with your nail color, keeping in mind also the condition of your hands, which is also important.

If you take good care of your hands to keep them as free as possible from blemishes, then have fun with the new nail colors that are coming out.  It is only when your hands become so knotty and old should you switch over to lighter tones, but even I would stop and suggest purchasing fingerless lace gloves, so you can have the pleasure of wearing wild nail colors and covering up any blemishes to your hands.   This is especially good when you’re going out in the evenings.

It’s not until you reach a point where even you think that it’s silly or foolish to wear over the top nail color should you then consider rolling back to something more basic and toned down.

So until you come to that decision just be free my Darklings, be free.

With Estee Lauder her nail polish sells for $20.00 a bottle, and I just had to purchase “Viper”, “Bette Noir” a very dark blue, “Chaos”  a grey silver, “Dressed to Kill” a metallic brownish gold, and “Smashed” a deep purple.

But if you are on a budget, at $1.99, Wet and Wild has their Halloween colors out now with deadly names such as “Poison Ivy” a very deep green, “Deadly Dose” a gold metallic, “Toxic Apple” a deep purple, “Root of Evil” a medium to dark blue depending upon how many coats you apply, and “Lethal Injection” a slightly lighter purple.

What I like about those above 5 colors, besides the colors, is that the bottles have a very nice shape and you can turn the labels outward so anyone checking out your makeup will have a slight eye brow lifting moment when they read the names of the colors, something that I thoroughly enjoy.

And if you can find it on Amazon look for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer Purple” and “Gray’s Anatomy” a silvery grey with floating highlights of injury green and purple bruise, these are also by Wet and Wild as a limited edition.

Spoiled, another budget nail brand, has come out with two green colors that I could not resist “Last Chance” so deep a green as to be almost black, and “San Francisco” a deep sparkly green for sparkly vampires. (more on sparkly vampires later)

Remille, a medium price polish at $5.00 a bottle came out with a deep blood red called “Lava Red” #400, that in some lights have a red brown color and in other lights a purple brown.

Sally Hansen has also come out with colors for Halloween and the Fall season, I’ve not been able to review the colors or make a note of their names, but be on the watch for them.

Of course Revlon has come out with non-sparkle or non-frosted nail colors going from yellow to blue to green, but for some reason they did not capture my interest, although I have an artistic friend who is experimenting with using the “flat” colors for painting, something that never occurred to me and certainly worth experimenting with for all you artistic types.

Here in the United States you can buy Spoiled, Wet and Wild and Revlon at either Walgreens or your CVS pharmacy stores or in your slightly better department stores such as J.C. Penny.

Alright Darklings, I had a chance to watch the pilot episode of “666 Park Avenue”

I’m not going to say that it grabbed me right away, but I did have the fun of figuring out what might happen, for me it was a bit of a guessing game, as well as seeing how the plot will develop. Some of it seemed a bit predictable,  young, bright, upwardly mobile couple, looking for the breaks in the Big Apple, not believing their good fortune and then the doubts begin to creep in.

Darklings you have to remember at my age I’ve not only read all the 36 basic plot devices I’ve also seen them and in some cases had to live them in real life.  Unless the writers come up with something of a real twist I can almost predict what will happen as the story goes along, so if the writers do not come up with some interesting new twists then it may lose my interest…..BUT…..

One thing for sure, it was very well done, my only major complaint in regards to production was that some of the sound when the actors were talking was a bit muffled, I’m not saying I have a hearing loss, because when it comes to anything on PBS or the other T.V. programs I hear them quiet well, including the lead actor’s voice in “Persons of Interest”.  It might have been how they recorded it or how it was transmitted.   I am going to write to ABC television and let them know.

The review for it was positive and I have to agree with it.  Excellent choice of actors for our villainous looking couple.

This series is loosely based on Gabriella Pierce’s novels, at least it gets its premise from them, and just as it is an on going soap opera mystery, it’s going to be interesting to see all the twists and turns in this little gothicly supernatural, dealing with souls program, if all goes well this could turn into a lovely little guilty pleasure, especially as a metaphor for how one will sell their soul to get ahead.  BUT only if the writers are inventive enough for my taste.

Just as with “Lost” if you are not going to be home then its best to record any episodes you might miss so you won’t miss the fun.   The Drake Apartment building is just as much an actor in this wickedly fun series, sort of like “Burnt Offerings” and “The Shining” with a mix of “Rosemary Baby” and “The Devil’s Advocate” and a tinge of “The Omen”, and although it won’t push the envelope like “American Horror Story” it will be fun to see how things develop and all the ‘inside puns’ which you as the viewer, will be in the know about.

I know I will continue to watch it, for now.

What Television program does an Elder Goth watch?

I was asked "What T.V. programs does an Elder/Elderly Goth watch or has watched?"

Well Darklings,

I have to confess I do not have cable, satellite, or go on Hulu or what ever means that people use to watch their programs or films.  And for you overseas readers of my blog,  the programs I’m going to mention have been shown here in the United States, but you might be able to find episodes on the internet.

Being an Elder/Elderly Goth and determined to keep some things in my life simple, I remain firmly using the old-fashioned Antenna reception, even if it has gone digital.

Darklings you have to remember I grew up at a time when Television was in its infancy, with programs such as Superman, Hopalong Cassidy, Howdy Doody, the Lone Ranger, Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond, Milton Berle, Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, Perry Mason, just to give you an idea.

And for some reason even today, I stubbornly remain fixed with Antenna reception, I mean why I should have to PAY to watch programs when I can get it for free, something that a number of people seem to forget, or wait for something to down load.

One thing I do remember, I always enjoyed best programs that talked about mysteries, ghosts, and hauntings, anything that was other worldly.  It was, in a way, a form of storytelling, and I enjoyed that as well when we had family gatherings.

It never failed, one family member or another would tell something funny, sad or spooky about an event or experience either by them or a friend or a long dead family member.

These stories I managed to write down, the funny ones were like some of Mark Twain’s stories as narrated by Hal Holbrook.

So sitting down either in front of the radio (there still were radio programs going on in the 50’s) or in the evening in front of the Television for our session of “storytelling” was a wonderful way to relax.  But that did not prevent us from having family fun night, because there usually was an evening in which there was nothing of interest that was the nights we’d played games or put puzzles together.

The only time we didn’t watch either Television or play games was during Easter, from Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday, no Television nor games, we could read books, but not comic books, I could color in my coloring book, and not until Easter Sunday could games be played.  I remember Grandma being very strict, no Television until after Easter Sunday and no radio unless it was on a classical music station, which made the men folk very unhappy, so they would sneak over to a neighbors’ house to listen to what ever baseball or football game was playing.

Frankly I enjoyed the enforced quiet during that time, it gave me a time to think, reflect to even talk to my parents about family and things, sitting out on the back porch looking at the garden watching the birds come to the feeder or taking a bath or a drink in the bird bath, and I still prefer the quiet to this very day.

But what programs did I watch?   Well I’m going to focus on the ones that were spooky and perfect for the Elder Goth.

Let’s start with Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond, this ran from 1959 to 1961 and all the stories had something to do with something supernatural

The Adventures of Ellery Queen—there were 4 T.V. productions, the one’s I remember is Murder is my Business and then two others in the late 1950’s and early 1970’s and always with a twisted solution.

Danger (T.V.) this was psychological suspense—I do not have any idea if there are any surviving episodes.

Science Fiction Theatre with Truman Bradley---I loved all the persudo science as presented in these stories, I rank it right up there with One Step Beyond.

The Addams Family---need I say more---there were times when I wished the Addams were our neighbors although my Mother would have been slightly concerned but not too much.  She always said that they appreciated family values even if they were slightly skewered.

Outer Limits ---“We control the Horizontal, we control the vertical….”

Thriller with Boris Karloff---“I promise you this will be a thriller…” and a wink and some of the stories would just blast you out of the water.

You Asked for it (from the 50’s and 80’s)- -- “Remember ‘You Asked For It!’”  some of the things they showed like a woman kissing a cobra, that was part of a ritual, not fake either.  (A side bar on this)  Some years later a friend of mine who deals in books on magic managed to get 16 mm film of almost all of the “You Asked For It” episodes, including the one of the cobra kissing woman, he said that a team of anthropologists were very interested in that episode as it was a verified ritual to bring rain and there were very few filmed segments of it and it was no longer being done.

And there were The Munsters ( I wish I had bought the dolls) , Creature Features, Dark Shadows (T.V.), Ghost Story/Circle of Fear (not to be confused with a book of the same name),  In Search Of…., The Magician, Mission Impossible, Man From Uncle, Blacke’s Magic, Friday the 13th (TV.), Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Dark Side, Night Gallery, Twilight Zone,  Unsolved Mysteries, The Sixth Sense (T.V.), The “X-files”---oh that was a winner

Of course we cannot forget “Kolcheck the Night Stalker”, everything stopped when this one came on, my Mom and Dad would talk about the stories that were presented and they’d tell me about what they had heard, so some of the stories on this program were based on legends or known myths.

But when my folks passed away, it was sad for me, I became depressed, I really had no interest in things, no one to talk to who understood these things, not even my siblings, it took me a long time to find other like minded people besides my Great-Aunt, until years later when “Supernatural” appeared on the independent channel, then things got interesting with their satiric take on the old legends.

I’ve found that many of the current programs are boring, all this “reality T.V.” is not “reality” to me, but a forced exaggeration of bad manners and manipulation.  And the vampire TV. programs, again “boooorrrriiiinnngggg” geared to teens and pre-teens.  Nothing I, as an Elder/Elderly Goth, could really “sink my teeth” into.

Since I do not have cable or satellite service, there is no way I can see the ghost hunting programs, until they come out on DVD, and I buy them out of interest.  And I can “tear them apart” as well, some of them, oh REALLY!!  “Dude Run!!!” and you can see the tennis shoes on the fake ghost on that program.

Those T.V. programs for an Elder/Elderly Goth that I listed were all of interest to me.  As a child my Mother never discourage me from anything that was ghostly, she always thought I should have a healthy interest in things unknown.

But Mother always made sure I watched Healthy programs like “Kukla, Fran and Ollie”, or “Howdy Doody” (please give me a break, although as a children’s program it could be fun), but Superman was always interesting and exciting (“Great Ceasar’s Ghost!”), to balance my viewing and she encouraged me to read as well.

My Dad adored the westerns and police dramas like Gunsmoke, Wyatt Earp, Tales of Wells Fargo, Wild Wild West, Dragnet, while I loved The Cisco Kid and Roy Rogers,  some of the comedy radio programs transferred over to television like George Burns and Gracie Allen, The Jack Benny Show, Amos and Andy and of course Ed Sullivan.

One show that my Granny loved to watch was “Life is Worth Living” with Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, I’d watch it with her and we would talk about those spiritual matters that Sheen brought up.  I learned about Death from Granny, she told me that the greatest gift was being able to die with dignity.

But please remember, television was not the focus of our lives, it was simply an attachment which we could ignore if we choose and there were evenings when we so choose to ignore it.

Those were family evenings, we’d play games, either board or card games, or put puzzles together and during all that we’d exchange what was happening in our individual spheres, Mom would mention if a repair that needed to be done, or an event that was coming up, my sister or brothers would mention a movie they’d like to see or something at school, Dad would be talking about finances (we’ll see if we can budget for it), and when we had other relatives over visiting it would almost always turn to something wonderfully spooky.

My Uncles and Aunts (I loved my Uncles but the women they married were pains in the you know what) lots of time they would talk about my Great-Aunt (whose home I inherited) and in scandalous tones, I felt that a lot of what they talked about was exaggerated.  Although there were times I felt that my Great-Aunt was a little like ‘Prendergast’ the character in the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child novels.  And when I met her finally, I adored her, although she was honest with me about her personality.  Yes she could be abrasive and manipulative, but in a way that was very helpful.

When she heard that Mother had passed away she was quick to call me and tell me that I was not alone, and it helped me get over the worse of my depression.  I’ll never forget her saying to me “One never gets over the loss of a loved one, one never gets over the loss of a loving parent, only through the passage of years can we even begin to deal with it and even then, when you least expect it we suddenly feel that loss all over again, but then my Dear, That is Love.”   That helped.

Now with ME-TV and RETRO-TV (here in the United States) can I begin to experience some of the pleasures of those old television programs and also Thanks to DVD’s  I am not trapped by the vulgarities of “reality shows” or paying for service, nor cramped by the down loading of HuLu.

But I am always on the hunt for programs or episodes that can send a thrill down my back, more recently I’ve been enjoying “CSI: Las Vegas” and “CSI: New York”, the “CSI: Miami” was interesting until they took a vendetta twist that bored me to death (Yawn).  And “Castle” is a fun program for an Elderly Goth, “Criminal Minds” there is something about going into the depths of depravity of a twisted mind that is morbidly fascinating,  “NCIS” (the original) while not a convoluted as “CSI”, has it’s moments, I think I love the characters of Ducky and the Perky Goth Girl. “Bones” of course I enjoy for its forensic information.  Of course “Supernatural”, but I always thought it was better dealing with haunted legends, going on the Angel course, well I’m not sure where that will end up.   “Nikita” a wonderfully dark spy program, I never know what she is going to do next, but it is the villainess of the piece that I like even better.

One program that I had hoped would continue was “Alcatraz” I really liked the dark psudo-science fiction in that, but it was never given a chance to develop and lift off.

I never discount the informative programs that one sees on our Public Broadcast station such as “Nova”, or our entertaining ones like “Life on Mars”, “Foyles’ War”, “Inspector Morse” and “Midsomer Murders”.  They can be a lot of Food for thought for an Elder/Elderly Goth.

But if one wants to be completely mundane---“Big Bang Theory”,  I have never laughed so hard at a comedy in ages, thoughtful, educational, frustrating with Sheldon Coopers’ attitude, but wonderfully balanced by his Mother’s practical if overboard Christian sensibility---I think where she talks about the Christian Cruise she’s going on was a Hoot with “Gunning for Gun”---where you write your sins on a clay pigeon, spring it and then shoot it down;  the “All You Can East Last Supper” Buffet;  and of course the “Jonah and the Whale Watching” tour, the program is a microcosm of over-thinking, self-centeredness and practicality, as combined by all the characters.

Far better than that stupid comedy about 4 self centered, unthinking people that talk about and do nothing called “Seinfeld”, I know there are people who are “Seinfeld” fans but if I knew people like that I would immediately remove them from my life---they are dangerous---to other people.  The only time the program was even remotely humorous was when the character of ‘Jackie Child’ appeared, as played by Phil Morris.  His development of that character was wonderful.

So what will the new television season bring to this Elder/Elderly Goth??  I honestly don’t know Darklings, but ‘stay tuned’ as they say.
